Zero. How Operation Needle Ended Motorcycle Theft in Liverpool City Centre

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-06-10 | In 2022, twelve motorcycles were stolen from Liverpool city centre during the Isle of Man TT fortnight. In 2025 — zero.

Operation Needle is Merseyside Police's dedicated motorcycle security initiative, running for the two weeks of the TT. This year the MAG Foundation — the registered charity that supports motorcycling causes across the UK — funded heavy-duty Oxford security chains and SelectaDNA forensic marking kits, distributed free to riders.

In this video: Sgt Craig Winstanley (Merseyside Police) explains how the operation works across prevention, disruption, and engagement. Nick Roach (SelectaDNA) demonstrates the forensic marking technology. Tony Cox (MAG Foundation trustee) explains why the charity backed the operation. And riders tell us what would actually make them feel safe parking a motorcycle in a city centre.

The result speaks for itself. The question now is how far this can go.

Ride to Work Day 2026: Why Motorcycle Commuters Ace Every Job Interview | MAG

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-06-09 | Ride to Work Day 2026 is Tuesday 9 June — and motorcycle commuters are proving they are the most employable people on the road.

MAG (Motorcycle Action Group) presents: We Ride Anyway. Four obstacles every motorcycle commuter faces on the way to work — theft risk, inconsistent bus lane access, inadequate motorcycle parking, and two decades of policy neglect — and why navigating all four makes riders the perfect job candidates.

This video walks through four competency-based interview questions and shows how the daily reality of commuting by motorcycle gives you the perfect answer to every single one.

Q1 — “Tell me about a time you proactively identified and mitigated a risk.”
Your daily anti-theft routine: chain, disc lock, tracker, sightlines, CCTV coverage. Risk assessed before 9am under real financial stakes.

Q2 — “Describe a situation where you had to operate without clear guidance.”
Bus lane access changes at borough boundaries with no coherent national policy. You plan the route, check the rules, and get on with it.

Q3 — “Give an example of finding a creative solution when expected resources weren’t available.”
Secure motorcycle parking at your workplace. The negotiation with the facilities manager. The quiet arrangement in the corner of the car park.

Q4 — “When have you delivered results without institutional support?”
The Government’s 2005 Motorcycling Strategy. Still waiting. Still commuting. Still arriving on time.

This week Colin headed to the CBS Arena Coventry for three events in one — Traffex, Parkex, and Cold Comfort — the flagship trade shows for the parking and traffic industry.

Despite being the premier event for parking professionals, there was no motorcycle parking option when booking. The only motorcycle parking available was a basic, awkward corner with zero facilities, not exactly what you’d expect from an industry flagship show.

It’s yet another example of how motorcyclists are still treated as an afterthought.

RANT ON! Advanced Emergency Braking

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-05-12 | Colin has been busy diligently putting together MAG’s five detailed responses to the Government’s road safety consultations (closed 11th May).

In this latest RANT ON Colin dives into 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙫𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙂𝘽 𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙚 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙡. It’s packed with a ridiculous 75 acronyms, including Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB). Of which there are three types: vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection.

But no AEB for motorcycles.

Once again, riders are underrepresented in a safety system. That’s exactly why MAG is pushing hard for proper systemic change.

We Invited Every Party to Talk to Scottish Riders… Here’s Who Actually Came

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-04-28 | MAG Scotland held a hustings event in Edinburgh ahead of the upcoming Scottish Parliament election, giving every major political party the opportunity to speak directly to the riding community.

Despite inviting all parties, only two turned up: the SNP and the Scottish Conservatives.

While the audience was smaller than hoped, we secured clear commitments on camera from:
✅ Stewart Hosie (SNP)
✅ Sue Webber (Scottish Conservatives)

Riders don’t disengage because they don’t care — they disengage because experience has taught them that no one is listening.

MAG Scotland gave every party the chance to face Scotland’s motorcyclists. The SNP and Scottish Conservatives took that opportunity. Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, and Reform did not.

To the parties who attended: We heard your commitments. We’ll be in touch.
To the parties who didn’t show up: The door remains open… but so does the question — why did you choose not to walk through it?

Riding isn’t just a hobby. It’s a right worth defending.

Who Makes These Rules!?

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-04-24 | 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀!?

Ride a motorcycle in the bus lane on the A40 outside the specified hours and it’s allowed. Ride it within those hours and, we’re told, it’s unsafe.
Ash from Gloucestershire has been asking the County Council since 2010 why motorcycles can’t use the A40 bus lane when it’s in operation. The Council’s position is that it isn’t safe for motorcyclists—yet cyclists are permitted. They later built a separate cycle lane alongside to improve cyclist safety but kept cyclist access to the bus lane. So, the bus lane is safe enough for cyclists to use, risky enough that public money was spent building an alternative and still deemed too dangerous for motorcyclists.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗲𝘁?

MAG has been campaigning for default motorcycle access to bus lanes for decades. Even after an overwhelming response in favour, the Government consultation on default access was rejected in 2024— opening bus lanes to motorcycles continues to be fought locally, area by area.

Riders, your letters make a real difference- and MAG is fighting on multiple fronts! MAG is actively campaigning for fairer treatment of motorcyclists, and contacting your MP is a key way to build pressure. Your voice matters- especially as part of a wider movement.

If you've been meaning to contact your MP but don't know where to start, this is for you!

Quick guide to writing to your MP effectively:
• It doesn't have to be perfect — Just make sure your message includes a clear, specific ask. For example: "Please write to the Treasury supporting MAG's call to apply the eVED exemption logic (low road damage from motorcycles) to all motorcycles."

• How to send it:

EV owners have long dealt with range anxiety – the fear of running out of charge far from a charger. Now, this EV-focused site (pushing hard for electric vehicle adoption) is predicting the same fate for petrol and diesel drivers: no more forecourts by 2038.

The rise of EVs and the ZEV mandate are putting pressure on the traditional fuel network.

Particularly at risk are rural independent petrol stations – around 64% of rural forecourts are privately owned, without the backing of large companies. These smaller sites will likely close first as fuel demand drops, especially as the ZEV mandate intensifies and new petrol/diesel car sales phase out.

In remote rural areas– riders could lose their nearest fuel stop entirely. That means longer detours, limited mobility, and real barriers to enjoying two-wheeled freedom. For many in the countryside, this could spell the end of convenient, reliable refuelling.

Make ALL Motorcycles VED-Exempt: Governments Own Logic Proves It!

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-02-13 | Make ALL Motorcycles VED-Exempt:

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)—road tax, whatever you choose to call it—is unfair and unjust for motorcyclists. MAG is campaigning to exempt all motorcycles from it, and right now we have a real opportunity to advance that goal—but we need your help urgently!

For years, MAG has argued that a weight-based taxation system is the fairest approach for everyone: heavier vehicles like HGVs pay more because they cause far greater road damage. This logic should apply across all vehicles, not just some.

In the government's new consultation on Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED)—a 3p-per-mile charge for electric cars starting April 2028—electric motorcycles have been explicitly exempted. They have accepted the logic and we believe this should be applied to conventional vehicles.
MAG's response to the consultation builds on this: since the government has accepted that motorcycles cause negligible road damage, the same weight-based fairness principle must now extend to all motorcycles, including conventional petrol ones. Exempting them aligns with true proportionality, encourages greener modal shifts, reduces congestion, and makes administrative sense given motorcycles represent under 1% of vehicle miles.

In late January 2026, Labour MP Julie Minns (Carlisle) introduced a Ten Minute Rule Bill called the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles Bill.

A Bill to prohibit the marketing, sale, and supply of electrically assisted pedal cycles that fall outside the class of electrically assisted pedal cycles prescribed under the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles Regulations 1983 and of equipment capable of converting a pedal cycle into such a vehicle; and for connected purposes.

A Ten Minute Rule Bill allows a backbench MP to introduce a proposed law and speak for up to 10 minutes to highlight an issue, gauge support, and raise public awareness. It does not guarantee passage but can influence debate or future legislation.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂?

• Casualty statistics for illegal/high-powered e-bikes are frequently recorded under motorcycle categories, making motorcycle injury figures appear worse.
• Anti-social or dangerous riding is often attributed to motorcyclists in reports.
• The concern is that law-abiding motorcyclists are being unfairly associated with the behaviour of a minority on non-compliant e-bikes.

If the framing focuses on the vehicle rather than the behaviour, could a ban on the sale of certain e-bikes (or related equipment) set a precedent for broader restrictions in the future?

Just as BikeSafe celebrates 25 years of saving lives across the UK, London has quietly lost its provision. The Met Police disbanded its six-officer Motorcycle Safety Team in February during a broader reorganisation, making in-person observed rides impossible in the capital. It wasn’t an explicit decision to end BikeSafe—but that’s been the outcome. So who is to blame for this decision?

• In London: BikeSafe observed rides are gone — no more in-person sessions.
• Outside London: It’s still running strong in over 30 forces, with 2026 bookings already opening.
The scheme is clearly valued and effective nationwide… but London shows how easily specialist safety programmes can vanish under restructuring and budget pressure — even without anyone deliberately choosing to end them.

RANT ON! Government Buried This Motorcycle Insurance Scandal

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) 2026-01-21 | How much do you pay for motorcycle insurance? Does getting your policy renewal make you wince? If it does, watch this!

The Labour Party manifesto promised to tackle the soaring cost of motor insurance. The Motor Insurance Taskforce was launched in October 2024 — but with no initial mention of motorcycles. MAG asked the direct question: Are motorcycles included?

The answer from the Department for Transport (17th October 2024): “Yes, motorcycle insurance is within the remit of the taskforce.”

The final report was quietly published on 10th December 2025 — right before the Christmas recess, with a press release but no opportunity for proper scrutiny. This 34-page document, the result of 14 months of work, mentions motorcycle insurance not once.

𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁
The consultation proposing to reduce the rural speed limit from 60 to 50mph closed in March 2025. They received nearly 20,000 responses, the vast majority (including from MAG) opposing the proposal. In December Transport Scotland said they were scrapping the plans for this blanket 50mph national speed limit.

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀
Thames Valley MAG Rep, Pete Seymour has reported more bus lane successes in Reading. “Temporary access to new and forthcoming bus lanes was made permanent last week. As a result of our efforts there was a large response to the RBC Consultation. Besides MAG members, three motorcycle groups have supported our efforts and responded, and are due a mention; Thames Valley Coalition (Associates), Berkshire Triumph Owners Group (Associates), and Thames Vale Advance Motorcyclists (non-Associate)”

𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆
Thank you to all those who heeded our call to respond to the Lancashire Combined Authority LTP consultation. The draft document failed to mention the existence of motorcycles. A meeting was held and they were very open to our comments and seemed genuinely willing to make substantive changes.

𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗮𝗻
Despite ongoing challenges, MAG firmly opposes any ban on internal combustion engine vehicle sales, on any timescale. Although no formal ban on ICE motorcycles has been enacted—and related consultations remain unfinished. The EU may relax its 2035 target, while the UK opposition pledges to scrap the UK ban if elected. Motorcycles remain overlooked in these debates. MAG will continue urging all parties: bin the ban.

𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆
The DfT has failed to deliver its promised 2025 headline policies: neither the Integrated National Transport Strategy—despite its consultation closing ten months ago—nor the Road Safety Strategy has been published.
One anticipated DfT action has materialised. The Motor Insurance Taskforce released its final report on 10 December. A detailed review will follow, but the document offers little substantive value.

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗘𝗧
The Metropolitan Police have formally disbanded the motorcycle road safety team responsible for delivering BikeSafe in London. This decision contrasts sharply with the scheme's ongoing stability and growth elsewhere in the country. Further developments are anticipated following a January meeting with Transport for London regarding motorcycle safety provisions in their Vision Zero Action Plan 2.

Name ONE successful industry that tells government their customers are too passionate. You can't - because it's strategic suicide. Passion is motorcycling's greatest political asset, not its weakness.
