Discover the Free Energy Principle as a framework for understanding how the brain self-organizes and minimizes uncertainty about the world. Does the brain keep an internal model of the world that it continues to update? How does this principle relate to perception, decision-making, and the human experience? How does our brain, a blob of neurons locked inside a skull, make sense of the chaotic data it receives from the world?
Friston introduces us to "Active Inference," the application of this principle, explaining how the brain samples the environment and updates its beliefs to create a cohesive understanding of reality. He discusses how psychiatric disorders, like schizophrenia, can arise when there’s a mismatch between the brain’s internal model and external reality, and how this theory could one day help explain and treat these conditions.
We explore how these ideas from neuroscience can be used in artificial intelligence and large language models, discussing the limits of machine learning. Can AI truly possess intelligence? Or is it merely following pre-programmed paths, unable to build the complex internal models humans use to navigate the world? Can AGI– artificial general intelligence– ever be achieved in a machine? What do we even mean when we say AGI? Does an objective reality even exist?

Learn about the CHAPEA mission designed to evaluate crew health and performance in isolation inside of a 3D-printed habitat at the Johnson Space Center, simulating the challenges of life on Mars. Kelly shares her experiences from spending 378 days in the habitat with her team, including a flight engineer, medical officer, and science officer. Discover how they navigated the psychological and physical demands of the mission, dealing with limited resources, and delayed communication with NASA and their families.
We explore the challenges of living in such a confined space, from growing food and maintaining a clean environment to the surprising dynamics of crew relationships under stress. They also touch on the importance of the simulated Mars environment, which included a VR setup for “Mars walks” and many troubleshooting tasks for the team.
We explore the tensions that arise when people are stuck together for so long, and what they get to bring with them to simulated Mars. What movies do Mars astronauts want to watch? Plus, do they keep staying on Earth time or switch to Martian time? And, learn about growing crops in the habitat and all the testing being done on the astronauts.
As they discuss the broader implications of such missions for future space exploration, Neil references sci-fi, including The Twilight Zone and The Martian, drawing parallels between the psychological toll of isolation in space and the themes explored in the show. Learn about "Cool Worlds"– planets that exist in the colder, outer regions of space. The discussion dives into the science of exoplanets, exo-rings, and the enigmatic exo-Trojans, revealing how these distant worlds differ from our own solar system.
Taking insights from the James Webb Space Telescope, we explore Kepler-167e, a Jupiter twin, and its potential for exomoon discovery. We explore the birth of our solar system, the search for the Sun's lost siblings, and the idea of rogue worlds– planets that wander the galaxy, untethered from any star.
We expand to include rapidly spinning stars, the process of aging them through gyrochronology, and the groundbreaking discoveries of JWST, such as binary Jupiter-mass objects. Plus, we cover plans for the Habitable Worlds Observatory, a next-generation telescope aimed at directly imaging the surface of exoplanets and potentially finding signs of life.
