Today is the 10th anniversary of Sandy Hook. This song is about the impossible thought process a parent must go through in the aftermath of such an unthinkable atrocity. I wrote this and sang this before either of my sons were born but I don’t think I’m gonna sing it again.
It’s a sad song. It would be strange to say I hope you enjoy it. But I hope you find some kind of meaning in it for you. A small effort to bring the humanity back to a desensitizingly regular piece of the news cycle.
Dawes is donating all of their proceeds from this song to the Brady Campaign / Team ENOUGH, and we want to thank our record label, Rounder Records, for their donation to Brady Campaign / Team ENOUGH.

Lyrics:
On the back end of a growth spurt
His red pants looked a little short
Telling me where and how his legs hurt
As we were walking out the door
I used to hate getting up early
Now I try not to make a fuss
My wife leaves for work at 7:30
And our kid never liked the bus
Getting the sequence in line
Trying to gather my thoughts
In the interest of time
As if we know what it wants
I found the structure of an echo
Beneath the surface of a pool
All of the X’s and all the zeros
The way a memory comes unspooled
Maybe time moves in more directions
In any moment of the day
All the contractions and extensions
In all the messes that we make
Getting the sequence in line
Trying to gather my thoughts
In the interest of time
As if we know what it wants
He threw his backpack around his shoulders
Before he ran off to join his friends
He said “Love you Dad, see you later”

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based rockers Dawes and Grammy Award-nominated Canadian artist Bahamas are teaming up for a very special streaming event exclusively via Mandolin.com. Filmed earlier this fall at Iowa City, IA’s historic Englert Theater during the collaborative “An Evening with Dawes and Bahamas” co-headline tour, the concert event will see Dawes and Bahamas banding together to perform two unique live sets, with Dawes backing Bahamas and Bahamas joining Dawes for an unprecedented joint performance. "At these shows Dawes (we) will be members of Bahamas and Bahamas (Afie) will be in Dawes. Just a steady flow of each other’s songs all night long" says Taylor Goldsmith.

"This song feels like the culmination of every song on the record. The negotiation between two seemingly opposing ideas - we need to accept the world as we find it but also can’t give up on making it a better place. It’s also my favorite musically and was the hardest to capture. There’s more sections and parts in this one than any of the others on the album. Getting the take on this tune felt like the biggest accomplishment of the recording session." - TG

Lyrics
The morning fog descends upon the late night’s cheapest thrills
The most committed socialites see the sunrise in the hills
Mistakes are slowly realized
Memories distilled
And the static starts to fade
From the laughter of a maniac
To a songbirds melody
From the howling of the sirens
To the swaying of the trees
It fuses all together
To find its perfect frequency
And then forever ricochets
Into a sound that no one made
I look up to see you slowing down while signaling a right
The older man behind us now
Is flashing you his brights
We both seem so distracted
By this growing appetite
To punish and persuade
The silent conversation gets directed toward the view
The cursive in the branches describes the avenue
The words like "I am sorry" and "I'm still in love with you"
Become a debt that won't get paid
Just another sound that no one made
I am rolling down the window to the city's radiation
The connected dream still dancing through the sky
I just need someone who will listen
Through this strange and dark existence
Or the consolation of knowing that you’ll try
As we pull off of the freeway
A hospital appears
I see a man up in the window
On the back end of his years
And I imagine him there dying
With that ringing in his ears
That we all end up with someday
There's a code within the symptom
A morbid sort of sign
The ominous reminder of the body's slow decline
As constant as a heartbeat
But stronger over time
While the rest of us decays
Listening to a sound that no one made

“This song is about how fragile our social arrangement is. Once the pandemic started and people started fearing that there wouldn’t be any food and that it was time to stockpile toilet paper, it really gave us all a glimpse into how this is all a tacit agreement to behave ourselves that should not be taken for granted.” - TG

Lyrics
Each morning my beloved
Asks me to open up my eyes
See what kind of attention I can pay
I see a corporate coffee house
Puttin’ up their Christmas decorations
Commuter cars all waiting at a light
A line outside the Roxy
Full of hopeful conversation
Some local band is playing there tonight
A couple walks their dog discussing
What to eat for dinner
A runaway is being read his rights
A hotel hosts a conference called
‘Investment For Beginners’
Some high school coach is
Breaking up a fight
But there’s a joke in there somewhere
A joke in there somewhere
A joke in there somewhere
One that I am not prepared to make
This afternoon my doctor
Had me sit down in a chair
He asks me then to walk him through my day
I heard radios bring ball games
To an ancient glacial traffic
A starving dog was whimpering in pain
A soundcheck through the alley that sounds like
Something close to magic
For a traveling dad that’s bound to miss his plane
A boomer on a cell phone
Talking through party provisions
Beneath the giant bullseye neon sign
And I mention dixie cups and pizza crusts
And giant televisions
The allegory of the conga line
There’s a joke in there somewhere
A joke in there somewhere
A joke in there somewhere
One that I just don’t know how to tell
And now as the sun is setting
I meet my brother for a drink
And he asks if I’ve got something on my mind
So I tell him about this movie
And how I didn’t get the ending
Why do they let the creature get away?
He reminds me that all it is
Is costumes and pretending
But there must be something else they’re trying to say
About these buildings and the asphalt
In their natural habitations
The pigeons, cats and rats and parasites
This wild and dancing city
Conducting perfect orchestrations
The way a stranger wishes us goodnight
But he says, “every time we’ve sat here
Getting nervous for the future
We’ve ended up some version of ok
These songs that we are singing
Shouldn’t give in to the rumors
They should give some kind of strength to meet the day”
But there’s a joke in there somewhere
A joke in there somewhere
A joke in there somewhere
We just gotta find a way to laugh

"The words to this song are about the early days of a band. Playing small clubs and going on small tours. As hard as it is in the moment, it’s hard not to look back at those times through rose colored glasses. It’s all a lot more romantic now. And it’s also what built our foundational faith in what we do. It’s the first time we’ve ever had a song with this kind of feel. We got Jonathan Wilson to play a second drum kit for the live take. Griffin and he switch off taking those drum breaks at the end. The solos were live on the floor and there’s no BGVs so other than extra percussion, a rhythm guitar, and an extra keyboard part, it’s all one live take. Feels like it’s gonna be a mainstay in the live show for a long time to come." - TG

Lyrics
Standing right outside the Echo
When we were still just cutting teeth
Turning madness into waveforms
Searching chords for what's beneath
All these existential freshmen
Trying to keep our noses clean
Scared to show our faith in
The ghost in the machine
Standing right outside the Echo
When we were working for the door
Assuming all our dreams were brighter than
The bands we played before
But you could see it in their hunger
You could hear it in their screams
They too were just trying to make contact
With the ghost in the machine
Through the build-ups and the breakdowns
Through the boom and through the crash
Building stockpiles of excuses
On how to trade it in for cash
All the poisonous motel rooms
The lobby call at 6:15
One million miles upon a highway
For a ghost in the machine
All the doubts and hesitations
I built up in my early years
Are under reconsideration
Through the music of the spheres
Which I cannot deny any longer
When every night I reconvene
With these vibrations giving proof of
The ghost in the machine

Building stockpiles of excuses
On how to trade it in for cash
All the poisonous motel rooms
The lobby call at 6:15
One million miles upon a highway
For a ghost in the machine
All the doubts and hesitations
I built up in my early years
Are under reconsideration
Through the music of the spheres
Which I cannot deny any longer
When every night I reconvene
With these vibrations giving proof of
The ghost in the machine

"This is a song (about how everything about us is tracked, documented, recorded, filed, mined, bought, sold, etc. etc. on some level) that is wrapped around a molten core of a breakdown/freakout/majorminorinterweave that is probably the moment I’m most proud of on the whole record. After showing you the blood and guts, we gently sew the song back together again and end with what could be the tagline for all of social media and the screen-life-culture that we subscribe to these days to varying degrees: 'Did you really need to cry? Or be seen crying?" - Taylor Goldsmith

Lyrics
A product of my time zone
Mixed CDs and dial tones
Where we would listen to the Universe think
While our heroes from the wreckage
Deliver us their message
On the perks of knowing how to lip sync
I can see the last frontier
The sunshine on a perfect day
Everything is permanent now
The single that gets overplayed
Everything is permanent now
The bubbles in your third rosé
Everything is permanent now
The movements of the Milky Way
Everything is permanent now
A wilderness of gossip
Asking for deposits
Yet it leaves you with some type of withdrawal
Playing on our senses
With a thousand of its lenses
On everything you ate or just bought
The voices in the atmosphere
The home life of celebrities
Everything is permanent now
Subliminal obscenities
Everything is permanent now
The side effects of ecstasy
Everything is permanent now
All the people that we used to be
Everything is permanent now
These tangled creeping vines
Towards a life you left behind
And the people you’d forgotten you kissed
A wayward strand of anger
At some controversial stranger
Who swears the virus didn’t exist
I don’t know where we go from here
I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel
The language of the hemispheres
The lonely server farms
The levels of the rising sea
Everything is permanent now
The politics of Christmas trees
Everything is permanent now
The whole world within one screen
Everything is permanent now
I’m thinking we should all come clean
Everything is permanent now
Did you really need to cry?
Or be seen crying?

"I had this riff and one of the verses for a while. Griffin, Wylie and Mike Viola came over to my backyard (this was peak covid) to just play music together for one of the first times since lockdown. I started sharing the song and Griffin and Mike started singing their background parts you hear on the choruses on the record immediately. It inspired me to finish writing it.
The lyric is about the arbitrary demands I make on myself. I want to perceive me or my life a certain way but I make no exceptions for an off day or a misstep. Whether it’s a win or a loss, it’s all transient, and only when I can live in some version of that awareness (which is itself transient) am I able to bat away any fears or anxieties or the consequences of an over indulged ego."

Lyric:
A boy that grows up in a beach town
And never learns to surf
Sounds like the perfect distillation
Of my time spent here on earth
But I have stared at the horizon
With both feet in the sand
The thing I love about the ocean
It comes in waves
I’ve been feeling like a light bulb
When the filament won’t glow
Surrounded by a darkness
‘Cause the current’s moving slow
Am I losing my intensity?
Is that feeling here to stay?
But that’s the thing ‘bout electricity
It comes in waves
I think I’ve found something in common
With nothingness and god
You stare at either in the face too long
They’ll do each other’s job
Sometimes the silences are holy
Sometimes I’m drifting into space
But if the spirit’s moving through me
It comes in waves
I think their grip is getting looser
I think they’re giving us a try
If you feel good about the future
Then baby, so do I
But let’s keep an eye on all our enemies
While we’re popping the champagne
‘Cause that’s the thing about a victory
It comes in waves

“The first half of this song could be about tyrants,” says Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith. “But it could also be about anyone who thinks that a little more control is gonna make everything ok. The second half is a response to that developing reality of the first half. The world might be a scary place sometimes but, to some degree, I want to believe I can decide how I respond to it.” - Dawes

Lyrics
You can poison opposition
Find out which war to declare
You can polish up the prisons
And send all your critics there
You seem willing and able
And used to getting your way
But you’re still waiting tables
In someone else’s cafe
You can call yourself a living god
If it rallies up the troops
Reinstate the firing squad
Lace up your combat boots
Your vitals are stable
In your stupid beret
But you’re still waiting tables
In someone else’s cafe
You can make em call you Beelzebub
You can make em call you chief
Make some face paint out of baby blood
Wear a necklace made of teeth
You could be living a fable
In your one man parade
But you’re still waiting tables
In someone else’s cafe
From the rock of the cradle
Til we’re dead in our graves
We’re all waiting tables
In someone else’s cafe
So let’s enjoy each other’s company
On the brink of our despair
Does someone have a song to sing
Or a joke that they could share?

I think we’re overeager to share this music. So when it came time to make a music video, we thought that instead of having me lip sync to the studio recording while pretending I’m a cab driver or something, let’s just play our whole album live in one night in a beautiful studio and film it. Give people a chance to hear what these songs sound like live before they even hear the studio versions. Give the songs a second dimension before we’ve even given them a first. Here’s hoping.

-Bonus 7” with B-sides “Strangers Getting Stranger” and “Rest Easy”
-New and enhanced album art
-Custom inner-sleeves with new liner notes by Taylor
-Includes digital download with 4 ‘NIW’ session B-sides
From the Bullpen #8 (continued)
Here’s another from the Nothing Is Wrong sessions that didn’t make the record. And unlike Strangers Getting Stranger and Rest Easy, it’s never been heard by anyone. Some of you may have heard the song itself from our recent Live at the Hotel Cafe release. And then there’s obviously the song it became a couple albums later.
On the organ for this one is Mike Finnigan. You may have seen from a few posts ago that he passed a little over a week ago. Look him up if you’re not familiar. He was a titan of a musician and we were lucky to have known him through Griff’s and my dad. They had played together in several bands for years. When he came in to play on our song I remember standing behind him and marveling at his command of the instrument. It feels good that this song would be coming out now.
It’s on the 10th anniversary edition as part of the 7 inch that come with the main record, out Friday in limited white & gold foil edition & digital. Listen & order at https://found.ee/Dawes10thNothingIsWrong

lyrics:
You can send me a message if you don’t wanna talk
Or make sure I don’t interrupt
It might help you let it go
It’s hard for you, I know
To act like you’re not giving up
But don’t send me away
There’s nowhere else I’m going to
Don’t send me away
I know that’s what you wanna do
Don’t send me away
You can send me a picture of the room you’re in
With your evening downtown view
The way the city spreads when you’re laying in your bed
You could send it so I know what I stand to lose
But don’t send me away
This is where I’m supposed to be
Don’t send me away
You don’t know what it'd do to me
Don’t send me away
I’m getting on the freeway
Your jacket's in my car
Your ash is in my ashtray
And I’m there with you wherever you are
