It's a simple little device that bridges HDMI and USB HID emulation to your laptop, acting as a keyboard/video/mouse display in a tiny package.TechxArtisan sent me this kit for review, no money changed hands. Overall I think the hardware is great. The kit I have includes the full bundle + the optional VGA cable (VGA really needs to disappear someday...). The software could use some work, it's functional but lacks niceties like pasting blocks of text. The lack of ISO emulation might be a dealbreaker, but you can plug a flash drive into the USB 2 port of the device to pass it through (or just directly into the device). Exploring my KEVIN and upgrading to 6GHz WiFi! (Davolink Minions Wifi 6E Router) apalrds adventures 2024-06-07 | You've probably seen Kevin hanging out in the background of some of my recent videos, so let's take a look and see what we can get for $129. He's rated at 'AXE5400', which in wifi naming means it support 802.11AX (wifi 6), E means it supports the 6Ghz band, and 5400 is the sum of the wifi bandwidth across all bands in absolutely perfect conditions, 5400 isn't that high for tri-band. Despite his low wireless rating he does in fact support 2.5Gbe on both LAN and WAN, although no PoE. He also supports 8 SSIDs per band, and you can either configure all 24 of those individually or configure them as 8 triple pairs.My goal is to eventually run OpenWRT on him. A Software Disappointment: Kwumsy H3 Stream Dock apalrds adventures 2024-04-12 | The Stream Dock:kwumsy.com/products/kwumsy-h3-8-in-1-visual-macro-keyboard-hub?ref=EeoX5XElS_V68NSo today I'm taking a look at the Kwumsy H3 'Stream Dock' No, not THAT Stream Deck, not a dock for the Steam Deck, there's already enough name confusion. Basically, it tries to be a lower cost touchscreen alternative to the real Stream Deck, making use of the same addon format for wide addon support, and also somehow a USB-C laptop dock with Ethernet, USB 3, HDMI, and USB-PD passthrough.While all of the hardware works as expected, the software experience isn't great. There are plenty of cases where it seems like the daemon doesn't automatically detect the H3 on boot, or the icons don't update. That said, I did a deep-dive into the USB protocol and it's pretty trivial and nearly identical to the 'real' Stream Deck protocol. Saving Power in my Homelab with Auto-Shutdown for Proxmox Backup Server apalrds adventures 2024-04-06 | Today I'm trying to reduce the power consumption of my [Proxmox Backup Server](/posts/2023/pbs_intro/). The HP Microserver is great for what I need, but it's kinda loud and I'm working on optimizing my power bill. The homelab is the largest single consumer of electricity aside from the air conditioning in the summer, so it's something I'm looking at heavily.I tried doing S3 speep (normal suspend to RAM) and found that the Microserver doesn't support this. I then didn't have enough space on my 16G boot disk (microSD card) for a swap partition to hibernate to, and don't want to mess with the partition tables on my zfs drives to add one there, so hibernate is out too. This leaves me with actually fully shutting the system down and booting back up in the future. Downside to this is the RTC won't wake it back up, I need to have another system send a Wake on LAN magic packet. Should I use TAPE BACKUP in 2023? LTO-5 Drive with Proxmox Backup Server apalrds adventures 2023-08-21 | As promised in a previous video about my Proxmox Backup Server, I have a Quantum LTO-5 tape drive that I'm going to try and use to implement a proper 3-tier backup strategy with offsite tapes. I'm currently using Linode's object storage for backing up my personal data (~200G), and not backing up the video files outside of the two existing copies (on the storage server and the PBS server). Updating my WORKSTATION! F in the Chat for my Threadripper :( apalrds adventures 2023-07-31 | So last week my beloved Threadripper workstation died suddenly, after 5 years in service. No idea what happened to cause this, but it's not coming back and it's too hard to get a replacement TR4 board. So, it's time to upgrade.I've decided due to budget limits to build a relatively average AMD AM5 system, which should have a good upgrade path and enough performance for now. The Ryzen 7600 should be less powerful than the outgoing Threadripper, but at much higher per-core performance, which isn't particularly helpful for rendering but is good for a lot of other day to day computing activities.Thank you to all who donated to the cause on Ko-Fi, hopefully you can see that I've already put your donation to good use. MOVING My Website from Static Hosting to Caddy! apalrds adventures 2023-07-28 | I've been using Linode's object hosting for my website for ~2 years now, and it's time for a change. I'm not unhappy with Linode, but object hosting isn't for me any more and I'd like to move up to a virtual private server. Object hosting is a fantastic way to get started with a static website for a low cost, but I want better backend analytics and more control of the whole process, so I'm setting up my own VPS using Caddy. At the same time, I'm setting up a privacy-respecting analytics system (Goatcounter) to read the web server log files and tell me how many viewers are enjoying my website. So, come along on this adventure!I've of course made sure the site is fully dual-stack with excellent IPv6 support, and even support HTTP/3 (QUIC)!
