Although seen as a primarily American campaign, 25 miles north of Aachen is Geilenkirchen near the Dutch/German border. In November after the city of Aachen had fallen to US forces, Operation Clipper was launched. It was an Allied offensive by the British XXX Corps (including the US 84th Infantry Division) to reduce the Geilenkirchen salient. One of the dramatic stories from this offensive occurred in Hatterath in a wooded area known to this day as Dorset Wood. Christopher Jary returns to talk about the men involved.

The battle for the city of Aachen and the greater Siegfried line was fought in late September and October. The US 1st Infantry Division had fought from Normandy through to Germany but the progression towards the city itself was slow. In today's show Gregory Fontenot will discuss the Division's operations.
Gregory Fontenot is a retired Colonel of the U.S. Army. He is currently a consultant on threat emulation for Army experimentation and a working historian. He was lead author of On Point: The US Army in Operation Iraqi Freedom published by CGSC Press and is the author of The 1st Infantry Division and the US Army Transformed: Road to Victory in Desert Storm, 1970-1991, winner of the 2017 Army Historical Foundation award for Unit History, as well as Loss and Redemption at St. Vith: The 7th Armored Division in the Battle of the Bulge.

The multi-storey apartments and other buildings in the formidable city of Aachen provided the defending Germans with superb cover and concealment, requiring the Big Red One and other attacking units to treat each one as a fortified bunker. The streets and boulevards canalised the attacking infantry, tank destroyers and tanks, turning them into killing zones. Fields of fire for the Allied armored commanders was restricted, as was their ability to maneuver. Yet our Urban Warfare expert Jayson Geroux is impressed by the initiatives and techniques shown by the Americans to overcome the defences.
Major Jayson Geroux graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, with a B.A. Degree (Honours) in History in 1993, specializing in 20th century military history. He received his M.A. Degree in Military History from the Brigadier Milton F. Gregg, V.C. Centre for the Study of War and Society, the Military History department of the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, N.B. in 2020, where his thesis focused on the Canadian urban operations battle of Ortona, Italy during the Second World War (1939-1945).

In this show we look at the French Forces that landed and fought in the South of France in 1944 under General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny. The First Army was mainly composed of troops from France's North African territories - Maghrebis, French Pied-Noirs together with a significant number of escapees from occupied France. These troops had played a major role in the Corsican and Italian campaigns, with about 130,000 men engaged. In Autumn 1944, First Army comprised about 250,000 men, half of them Indigenes and half Europeans from North Africa. From September 1944 onward, 114,000 men of the French Forces of the Interior were added to the First Army, replacing many African troops. Eventually, more than 320,000 men would form the First Army during its final advances in Germany and Austria.

The Battle of the Scheldt is one of the largest military operations on Dutch territory. Yet this battle is relatively unknown, especially outside Zeeland and West Brabant. In today's show, we invite a historian from the Netherlands to offer a Dutch perspective of this pivotal battle.
On 4 September 1944, the port installations of Antwerp fall into Allied hands virtually undamaged. Due to major logistical problems after the rapid advance from Normandy, this is a huge stroke of luck for the Allies. But as long as German guns in the Scheldt estuary control access to the port city, they have no use for possession of the ports. Hitler recognises the strategic importance and orders his troops in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Walcheren to hold out to the last man.
The consequences of the war violence are disastrous. More than five thousand soldiers and civilians do not survive the Battle of the Scheldt, thousands are wounded and entire villages and landscapes are destroyed. The Canadians experience the victory as a 'Terrible Victory' and the fighting in the southwest of the Netherlands as the bloodiest of their campaign in Western Europe.
Tobias van Gent is a Dutch historian and politician, who also served as a Member of Parliament. He is currently working at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg as a professor in history and political sciences. bol.com/nl/nl/p/slag-om-de-schelde-1944/9200000116403470

To support the landings at Westkapelle in Operation Infatuate II, the invasion forces were accompanied by an eclectic mix of armed landing craft. In the shallow waters off the island of Walcheren, these were the only offensive vessels that could get in close to the island to cover the LCTs carrying the land forces to the shore. Having previously operated off Normandy under the designation Support Squadron Eastern Flank, the collection of Landing Craft Flak, Gun, Rocket and Support were called upon to support an amphibious assault once more, in what would be their last battle.

Best-selling author Damien Lewis joins us to talk about the real men that were portrayed in the recent Guy Ritchie movie. Operation Postmaster was a British mission conducted on the Spanish island of Fernando Po, now known as Bioko, off West Africa in the Gulf of Guinea in 1942. The operation was carried out by the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF) and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in January 1942. Their objective was to board the Italian and German ships in the harbour and sail them to Lagos. The SSRF under the command of Major Gus March-Phillipps left Britain in August 1941 and sailed the Brixham trawler, Maid of Honour, to the Spanish colony.

In the South of France, the most memorable event of the Second World War was the sea and airborne invasion of 15 August 1944. Perhaps because it went relatively smoothly, this "Second D-Day" was soon relegated to the back pages of history. Operation Dragoon and the liberation is however only a small part of the story. The arrival of the Allies was preceded by years of suffering and sacrifice under Hitléro-Vichyssois oppression.
Provençale people still struggle to come to terms with the painful past of split-allegiances and empty stomachs, which epitomize les années noirs (the dark years). Deportations, requisitions, forced labour, and hunger provoked some level of resistance by a courageous minority. Many actively colluded with the enemy, but most just waited for better days. By sea and air, Allied agents and Special Forces were infiltrated to fan the flames, but wherever the Resistance rose up prematurely, the reprisals from the Nazis and their auxiliaries were ferocious.

Following the overwhelming victory on D-Day, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin all seek to shape the global future to their own ends and win the race to Berlin.
The British launch Operation Market Garden, the greatest airborne operation the world has ever seen. It is a bold roll of the dice, which, if successful, will end the war in weeks. But behind the scenes, spies are working, and plans are betrayed, the operation fails and thousands of Allied soldiers die.
The Traitor of Arnhem tells a never-before-told story of this iconic operation, and of the very different figures working in secret to cause the catastrophic defeat. One traitor a terrifying giant of a man, a supposed hero of the resistance who sent hundreds of fellow freedom fighters to torture and death, the other an aristocrat and an English gentleman, working from inside the heart of the Allied war effort in London. Both of them working for the Russians.
Robert Verkaik is an author and award-winning journalist. He was the home affairs editor of the Independent and the security editor of the Mail on Sunday. Robert is the author of a number of history books published in Britain, but The Traitor of Arnhem is his first book to be published in America. He lives in Surrey, England.

Al Murray has always been obsessed by this legendary battle, and in Arnhem: Black Tuesday he showcases all of his knowledge, interpretation and enthusiasm to bear to tell the story of one of history’s great heroic failures differently for the first time. The Battle of Arnhem is one of the best-known stories in British military history: a daring but doomed attempt to secure a vital bridgehead across the Rhine in order to end the war before Christmas 1944. It is always written about, with the benefit of unerring 20/20 hindsight, as being destined to fail, but the men who fought there, men of military legend, didn't know that that was to be their fate.
Tuesday 19 September 1944 was the terrible day which became known as Black Tuesday. From just after 1200 hours while plans were being made to seize the initiative and optimism reigned, to the following midnight, when Arnhem was burning and the Allied fortunes looked very different, a mere twenty-four hours changed the course of the war.

Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart (1887–1970) was an impressive figure: a diplomat, intelligence agent, conspirator, journalist and propagandist who played a key role in both world wars. He was a man who charmed his way into the confidences of everyone from Leon Trotsky to Anthony Eden. A man whom the influential press baron Lord Beaverbook claimed ‘could well have been prime minister’. And yet Lockhart died almost forgotten and near destitute, a Scottish footnote in the pages of history.
James Crossland is a Professor of International History at Liverpool John Moores University. He has worked in both the United Kingdom and Australia, combining his passion for writing with an interest in the history of conflict, terrorism, psychological warfare and intelligence.
He authored the first history of Britain's humanitarian response to the Second World War, "Britain and the International Committee of the Red Cross, 1939-1945", the story of the men and women who tried to bring rules to modern warfare, "War, Law and Humanity: the Campaign to Control Warfare, 1853-1914" and, most recently, the history of terrorism in the late nineteenth century, "The Rise of Devils: Fear and the Origins of Modern Terrorism".
James' latest book is a passion project over a decade in the making - "Rogue Agent: From Secret Operations to Psychological Warfare, the Untold Story of Robert Bruce Lockhart". This is the first biography of the man who led a plot to destroy Bolshevism in Russia in 1918 and ran Britain's secret psychological warfare campaign against the Nazis during the Second World War, all whilst becoming a best-selling author and one of the most-well connected political agents in Europe.

When the Germans marched in and the lamps went out in the City of Light the millions who loved Paris mourned. Liberation, four years later, triggered an explosion of joy and relief. It was the party of the century and everybody who was anybody was there. General Charles de Gaulle seized the moment to create an instant legend that would take its place alongside the great moments in French history. After years of oppression and humiliation Parisians had risen to reclaim their city and drive out the forces of darkness – or so the story went.
Our guest will tell this story of those heady days of suspense, danger, exhilaration – and vengeance – through the eyes of a range of participants, reflecting all sides of the conflict: Americans, French and Germans; resisters and collaborators. Among them are famous names like Ernest Hemingway, J.D. Salinger and Pablo Picasso, but also some fascinating unknowns including a medic turned Resistance gunwoman, an androgynous Hungarian sculptor and a French bluestocking who quietly set about saving the nation’s art treasures from the Nazi looters.

In the 1930s, amidst an impending crisis in Europe, Winston Churchill found himself out of government and with little power. In these years, Chartwell, his country home in Kent, became the headquarters of his campaign against Nazi Germany. He invited trusted advisors and informants, including Albert Einstein and T. E. Lawrence, who could strengthen his hand as he worked tirelessly to sound the alarm at the prospect of war.
Katherine Carter joins us on WW2TV to tell the extraordinary story of the remarkable but little known meetings that took place behind closed doors at Chartwell. From household names to political leaders, diplomats to spies, Carter reveals a fascinating cast of characters, each of whom made their mark on Churchill’s thinking and political strategy. With Chartwell as his base, Churchill gathered intelligence about Germany’s preparations for war—and, in doing so, put himself in a position to change the course of history.
Katherine Carter is a curator and historian who has managed the house and collections at Chartwell, Churchill's country home, for more than a decade. A widely sought after commentator and adviser on the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, she lectures internationally and appears frequently in print and broadcast media.

In August 1944 while most of Patton's 3rd Army turned east toward Paris, the 83rd Division turned west into Brittany and the coastal towns of St. Malo. The German Commander had said he would "hold out to the last man" in an ancient fortress that had been heavily reinforced with concrete and contained underground tunnels, storage areas, power plants, ammo dumps, living quarters, and even a hospital. En route to Saint Malo, the 83rd had to cross rivers, canals, marshes, and heavily fortified areas of high ground. Inside the fortified city of St. Malo was the Citadel itself, defended by German troops hardened in the Normandy campaign and led by a determined commander.
The battle for St. Malo and Dinard involved attacks on four different fronts by all three infantry regiments of the 83rd as well as the 121st Infantry Regiment of the 8th Division. Then, incredibly, in the midst of the battle, the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the 331st Infantry swung around 56 miles from their position northeast of St. Malo to a position west of Dinan across the Rance River. From there, they drove north to link up with the 121st Infantry which had been cut off in a Nazi counterattack, and then continued the push to Dinard.

In 1940 to enable his U-boats to be able to swiftly strike in the Atlantic, Admiral Karl Dönitz, Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, decided to base much of his submarine force in the French ports in Brittany. Massive pens were constructed in the cities of Brest, La Rochelle, Lorient and Saint Nazairre, from which the U-Boat menace carried out many successful operations.
