PRESS CONFERENCE: DPD Launches DenverTrack Program to Combat Auto Theft Denver Police 2023-03-03 | Denver – Friday, March 3, 2023 – Today, the Denver Police Department (DPD) announced a new program to combat auto thefts – DenverTrack. The DenverTrack program works with any vehicle with an installed tracking device, including factory-installed or after-market devices, and GPS and Bluetooth tracking devices to track stolen vehicles in real time. The program requires vehicle owners to register for DenverTrack to preauthorize Denver Police access to the GPS location data only in the unfortunate event that their vehicle is stolen. If a registered vehicle is reported stolen, DPD will then confirm consent from the vehicle’s owner to access the vehicle tracking information in real time, with the goal of quickly locating and returning the vehicle to the owner and arresting the suspect(s). “The Denver Police Department is committed to reducing auto thefts in Denver and recognizes the significant impact this particular crime has had on our residents and visitors,” said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas. “In 2022, Denver Police officers arrested 1,484 suspects for auto theft, compared to the nearly 14,900 reported stolen vehicles in Denver, which is why having tracking information in real time is vital in retrieving stolen vehicles and holding offenders accountable.”Vehicle owners can visit www.denvergov.org/DenverTrack to register their vehicle and learn more about the program and additional auto theft prevention tips. Once the vehicle is registered online, DPD will mail DenverTrack stickers to owners to place on their vehicle’s windows to deter potential thieves from stealing their car. Two sticker designs are attached to this press release. Placing a sticker on the registered vehicle is encouraged, but not required. While the program is free to register, a fee from the manufacturer may incur if the GPS system is accessed.

PRESS CONFERENCE: Neighborhood Heroes Denver Police 2022-12-05 | Earlier today, the Daniels Fund and Denver Police Department recognized four heroes who assisted an on-duty Denver Police officer who crashed while riding his motorcycle on the highway. The officer and men who helped him were reunited for the first time during the event.The Daniels Fund awarded Colorado Department of Corrections Sgt. Robert Pressley, Hector Araujo Jr., Vincent Plaskey, and Austin Mackay with the Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Award and presented them each with a $1,000 check as an expression of gratitude for their courageous actions. The Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Award was established by the Daniels Fund to recognize members of our community who go “above and beyond” and make heroic efforts to help others.“It is an honor for us to recognize these four individuals for rushing to the aid of Officer Pequeno,” said Hanna Skandera, President & CEO of the Daniels Fund. “Their actions truly exemplify the spirit of this award and the values of Bill Daniels — selflessly going above and beyond the call of duty to help someone in need.” At approximately 5:15 a.m., on July 21, 2022, Denver Police Traffic Officer Anthony Pequeno was involved in a serious motorcycle crash on northbound Interstate 25 near 23rd Avenue. Officer Pequeno was attempting to stop a driver who committed a serious traffic violation when Pequeno’s motorcycle experienced an anomaly that caused Officer Pequeno to lose control of his motorcycle and strike the highway median – while traveling at a high rate of speed.Officer Pequeno was seriously injured and was pinned under his motorcycle in the far-left lane of traffic. Three drivers observed this incident and quickly positioned their vehicles in a manner that created a barrier between oncoming traffic and the officer. The three gentlemen, Hector Araujo, Vincent Plaskey and Austin Mackay then exited their vehicles and rendered aid to Officer Pequeno as he lay injured on the highway.At that same time, Colorado Department of Corrections Sergeant Robert Pressley was driving by the scene and observed Officer Pequeno down on the highway. Sgt. Pressley had medical supplies in his vehicle and pulled over to assist in rendering medical aid to Officer Pequeno. Sgt. Pressley applied bandages to Officer Pequeno’s abrasions and remained with the officer until paramedics arrived.“The quick and thoughtful actions by these individuals undoubtedly prevented this incident from becoming worse and I cannot thank them enough for their potentially life-saving actions in helping our officer,” said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas. “These individuals are true heroes, and we are honored to acknowledge them.”After the heroes were presented with the Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Award, the Denver Police Department also recognized them with a Community Hero Award.

PRESS CONFERENCE: Denver Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of 14-year-old “JoJo” Aragon Denver Police 2022-10-02 | The Denver Police Department announce the arrest of a 17-year-old male in connection with the murder of 14-year-old Josiaz “JoJo” Aragon. The suspect is being held for Investigation of First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery, Tampering with Physical Evidence in a Felony Crime, and Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile.On August 8, 2022, shortly after 1:15 p.m., Denver Police responded to a reported deceased individual outside the Southwest Recreation Center at 9200 W. Saratoga Pl. Upon arrival, officers found Josiaz Aragon deceased with apparent signs of trauma. The Denver Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy and determined the cause of death was multiple sharp and blunt force injuries with a gunshot wound, and that the manner of death was homicide. Over the course of the past seven weeks, Denver Police homicide investigators tirelessly conducted an extensive, complex investigation resulting in the identification of the juvenile suspect, obtained an arrest warrant yesterday, and officers located and took the suspect into custody last night in Southwest Denver. The Denver Police Department thanks members of the community who shared critical tips in the early stages of the investigation that led to the suspect’s identification.Per standard protocol, the Denver District Attorney’s Office will make the determination regarding charges. Due to the suspect’s age, the booking photo and arrest affidavit are not available for release.
