Log Wizard vs Spud to Peel Logs Survival Sherpa 2022-01-20 | My overall impression of the Log Wizard is that it gets the job done but is much slower than peeling bark with the spud (if the sap is rising). The problem is that when the sap is not rising in the winter months, the spud is really not an option. A drawknife would work but I'm not in love with the drawknife method... been there done that. Dimensional Floor Joists on Sill Logs Survival Sherpa 2019-07-28 | Those who have followed this log cabin build may remember the hand-hewn log floor joists on the first build. I made the decision to abandon this floor system. Why? During disassembly, we discovered that one sill log notched to accept the floor joists had significant decay. This log came from a dead-standing pine tree which seemed to be solid. I opted to replace it with another log. Even if the sill log had remained solid, I quickly realized that the alignment of the sill logs would have to be perfect to be able to use the hewn log joists. Four Rows High on the Log Cabin Survival Sherpa 2019-07-27 | Every log you see was felled and bucked with an ax, with a few back cuts using a one-man hand saw. Logs were debarked with a barking sud or draw knife. Most of the assembly on the original site was done with a brace and bit and sledge hammer. I chose this pioneer method the first time around. On the rebuild, I'm running power tools with a generator. The use of modern tools has sped up the process considerably. Splitting Wood with a Double Bit Ax Survival Sherpa 2019-01-29 | A dead-standing Red Oak broken halfway up needed to come down for firewood for the outdoor classroom. Some of the punky top portion split like butter. There was still good, solid wood 2/3's of the way down. This is my method of splitting either ax-cut or saw-cut rounds. I've found this to be the most efficient for me. Your mileage may vary. I've had many say it's not safe. As long as you keep your feet within the frontal zone, glancing blows will miss the body. Experimenting with NW Primates Tunnel Hearth Survival Sherpa 2018-10-16 | If you haven't found NW Primate on YouTube, you should check him out. He has some really creative stuff going in Washington state. This was my experimentation with his side tunnel bow drill method. Hand Drill on a Stump Saves Old Knees Survival Sherpa 2018-09-07 | With the amount of friction fires we do at school, I find using an elevated platform saves wear and tear on my knees at our outdoor classroom. Even middle school students seem to like this method. DRG Update... and Subfloor Installed Survival Sherpa 2018-08-05 | Want to say how thankful we are to have a great report from DRG's oncologist! Thank you to all who have prayed and supported us through this 6 year battle! I chose to expedite the flooring by using 3/4" plywood. No, I didn't make the plywood in the woods, lol. I plan to build a gin pole to replace the tripod for lifting logs as the walls grow higher. The gin pole base will rest on the subfloor and be able to move to each wall as needed. Shimming Red Cedar Piers for Log Floor Joists Survival Sherpa 2018-08-02 | Instead of a continuous girder, individual cedar piers were installed under each floor joist and the front porch sill log. Shims were added to keep the joists level.
