Denver Silent Film Festival 2025 | Women of Destruction

rainbowFRIGHT 2025-09-22 | I had the chance to attend one of the events at the Denver Silent Film Festival, presented by Sie ( Denver Film ), Denver’s only nonprofit theater. The three-day festival was packed with treasures, but I chose to spend my Saturday with Cinema's First Nasty Women: The Queens of Destruction, a curated selection of eleven films from a larger collection of ninety-nine.

It was an unforgettable experience. The films, created by women writers, directors, actors, and producers more than a century ago, lit up the screen with a rebellious spirit that still feels daring today. Watching these stories unfold with a live piano accompaniment reminded me that this is truly how silent films are meant to be seen, immersive, immediate, and alive. Though many of these works have been beautifully restored and paired with new compositions, the magic of experiencing them in real time was unmatched.

What struck me most was the resilience of these women. A hundred years ago, they were already carving out space in an industry that often sidelined their voices. Sitting in the theater, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much progress has been made, and how much further we still have to go. Their creativity and determination remain a powerful reminder: even when it feels like we’re shouting into the void, our voices matter, and they echo across generations.

Sundance’s First Event in Boulder, CO!

rainbowFRIGHT 2025-08-30 | I attended “Meet the Programmers” at the Boulder Theater, hosted by Sundance Institute!

This was the very first Sundance event in Boulder since the big announcement that the festival is officially moving from Utah to Colorado.

The conversation was both exciting and historic, they’re essentially planning two festivals at once:

🎬 The final Utah-based Sundance in 2026
🎬 The first Boulder-based Sundance in 2027

We heard from Film Festival Director, Eugene Hernandez and Director of Programming, Kim Yutani, hosted by Colorado journalist, Lisa Kennedy.
They were joined by Senior Programmer, John Nein, and the rest of the programming team, giving us a glimpse into how much passion and strategy goes into curating the festival.

It was incredible being in a room full of people who love film as much as I do, whether it’s watching, creating, or supporting it.

I thankfully arrived early because by the time the event started, there were about 200 people lined up outside. The turnout was unreal!

Moments like this remind me why I love being part of this community and why film continues to feel like home. 🍿
