Yet Another Spring (bass) is Upon us :) lignum 2024-03-18 | After 40 years of growing in our back yard, the big walnut tree started drying up and undermining our workshop foundations so we decided to put it to a good use and transform a little piece of it into one of our spring basses. With this 30'' short scale we continue to extend our line of basses of all scale sizes from 23'' to 42''. A lot of people watching my last guitar video liked the no music, only workshop noises kind of video so I decided to make another one like it. Tiny but Powerful - Building a Custom 23 Short- Scale Bass From Scratch lignum 2024-01-11 | After all those "I wish your videos were longer" comments, I decided to make a half an hour video. Also something you haven't seen before, not a single frame in this video is speed up. Everything is 100% the same speed as it was done. This gives more of the chance to see finer details and a closer idea of the time it takes to finish a project like this. As for the instrument, my brother drew the shape, and the design waited for the right customer for over a year. This one will find it's home in California. The wood we used for this project is Padouk for the neck with maple veneer in between the slats, and oak wood for the body. Riviera single headless head pieces hold the strings at the head and Riviera headless single bridges tension them at the body. We chose Delano SONAR 2 buffer paired with THE EXTENDER 5HE/S pickup for this build. Schaller S-locks hold the straps. Fret-board is oiled and the body is sprayed in two coats of matte varnish. Vacation House Build - Post and Beam lignum 2023-12-15 | This is a vacation house project we are currently working on for a private investor. This video part will cover the build from the installation of the metal brackets to the concrete slab up to the preparation for the roofing tiles. All the posts and beams are made from laminated timber in GL24 class. Posts are 16x16cm, braces are 16x10cm, beams are mostly 18x20cm and rafters are 10x32cm. We tried to do most of the work in the workshop so the cutting on the site was brought down to the minimum. Each post and beam was cut to measure, all the slits and holes were drilled. We hired a laser cutting company to cut all the steel elements, then we welded them into nodes in our workshop. All the steel is hot dip galvanized. Larch cladding is going up- My House Build Pt15 lignum 2023-09-05 | It has been a long time since last video I published and even longer since my last house update. The larch planks were planed and painted in protective coat almost a year ago and were stored in the workshop until about a month ago when we started the assembly. Plastering - My House Build Pt14 lignum 2023-05-14 | A lot of time has passed since my last house video so here is what we were up to lately. First idea was to put drywall on all the masonry surfaces by myself but as spring came and construction season approached, I couldn't spare so much time for this big part of the build so I hired professionals. Also, my thought processes was if I'm hiring someone, quality should be a priority so I chose plastering over the drywall. Now when it's done, I couldn't be happier with the result. I could never achieve this level of flat surfaces and in just 8 work days. We used gypsum- lime- cement plaster. From start to finish - making a glow in dark SPACE BASS lignum 2023-04-06 | Our first glow in dark prototype is complete! We worked on this project on and off when we found time along with our other projects and we can't be happier how it turned out. The body is a little bit modified spring bass model while the head is similar to the Nate Navarro's sub octave bass. Wood used for this project is zebrano, maple and wenge. Also mahogany and ash veneer for in between the layers and electronics cover. We learned from our mistakes so we ditched the cheap looking hooks that held the strings and replaced them with single bone piece. We also abandoned the 3d printed knobs and replaced them with wooden ones. Greatest challenge was achieving the colors we imagined so it took a lot of layers of different kinds of lacquer, also sanding off entire layers when we weren't happy with the result. There were a couple of occasion where we thought about using this guitar as firewood;) It took probably a month of trial and error from the first layer to the polishing but I think the result was worth it. We Have Light!- My House Build Pt13 lignum 2023-03-12 | We did a lot since last video so here is some of the work we have done. Plumber did almost complete water installation, unfortunately i had other project at the same time so I couldn't film his work in detail but did managed to capture some of it to give you an idea of how it is done. I also managed to pull all the electrical cables throughout the house so the walls are now more or less ready for wall plaster. We also managed to finish the insulation and first layer of siding on the tool shack but I thought it would be too much for one video so it will come in the next episode together with wooden siding on the entire house. 6 Days in 8 Minutes- 100m2 House Frame lignum 2023-02-09 | A short video of a project we started recently, a bit slower pace this time.. Cross section of wood elements is 6x16cm for wall, 6x20 ceiling and roof, 16x16 beams and posts. This type of build is not so common here in Croatia but it's getting more and more popular with each passing year, especially because of the building speed and structural resistance to earthquakes.. There is not so many difference to american style of building in this stage of the build, biggest difference is in cross section of elements and use of screws instead of nails. Making a Sub-Octave Bass for Nate Navarro - Workshop sounds, no talk lignum 2023-01-13 | Finally, It's completed! We started work on this collaboration project more than a year ago, we postponed it a couple of times due to other projects and workload but we managed to bring it to the end. We would like to thank Nate for giving us this chance to bring this project to life and create something new and unique. As you can already tell by the title, this instrument is tuned to an octave lower than standard tuning. To achieve this we had to lengthen the scale and order custom made strings just for this project. We used similar design we use for our spring bass model but with more intricate wood combination. 18 Months in 35 Minutes, Couple builds a dream home .. lignum 2022-12-23 | A long time has passed since my fiancee and I started working on our future home project so after year and a half, I think it's time to make a video of all the work we have done so far. In this 35 minutes video you can see all the steps from marking the outlines of the house, up to the day the house was finally water tight. My House Build Pt11- House gets covered in insulation lignum 2022-10-16 | We did some work since our last video and here it is. We finally started putting on the insulation layer on the house and also steel supports for wooden facade. Also the south glazing got its outer larch cover. We connected the outer storage room to the house with a carport roof. The house is closing to completion on the outside and we can't be happier to be able to start working on the dry and wind free interior. Hopefully the front door comes next week and the wooden facade will be up for the next video.. always laughed at couples from grand designs when giving prognosis for moving in date , usually it's Christmas.. :D Now I realized, I'm just like them..Thank you for watching! New workshop with new toys! lignum 2022-09-22 | After all the great interest and orders we received for our instruments, we decided to dedicate a part of our old workshop just for making them. Hopefully this part of our business will continue to grow and expand. Area where I used to sand blast and was used as storage for our briquettes was repurposed. One wall was turned into spray booth with filters to level up the finishing. We also decided to invest in tools and machines we needed for the job and also in a new precise cnc . Robots are great for what we usually do, wooden structures, tables etc. but for extremely precise work, we had to step it up a little..I hope You enjoyed this, a little bit different video! My House Build Pt10 - Glazing is here lignum 2022-08-28 | Hello!:) In this episode we tied all the necessary rebar and poured the tie beams on top of the walls we were building in the last episode. We removed the form work and installed four larch doors which will hold the glass panels. Also The triple glazing is here so we installed it with the help of an improvised lifting jig. In a few weeks, the front door should be installed so we can finally start with proper interior work. Also we should connect the shack and the house with a roof so we can take the crane to the other construction site we have to start asap. Thank you for watching! My House Build Pt9 - Interior walls and sheet metal roofing lignum 2022-07-29 | Hello! Turn the CC on for subtitles! A lot work was planned for the last few weeks but I had to be in covid isolation for 10 days so a bit shorter video this time.. Anyway, we built dividing walls on the top floor, we got a main bathroom, small bathroom and two single bed bedrooms. On top of them there will be one storage room and one big room I will probably use for a movie projector. I hoped it would be in use by the time new LOTR series get released but yeah.. I have to complete them asap so we can start putting down the electrical wiring, plumbing and underfloor heating. The roofing is corugated sheet metal and will be ultimately covered in solar pannels. I dont have much experience in solar technology so I'm still researching at this point. Hopefully I'l get at least part of them up before winter..Thank you for watching! 300 Year Old House Gets a New Roof - renovation / reconstruction Pt-2 lignum 2022-05-31 | Part 2 of the project I've been working on over the last couple of months. CC on for subtitles. After we assembled the wooden structure, it was time to cover it. First we nailed 12mm osb on top of our structure, then we covered it with water insulation membrane which is vapor permeable. Then the vertical and horizontal battens were nailed and screwed trough osb into glulam. The Old roof was covered in baked clay tiles which were mortared into place, we used the same shape modern tiles which we glued together using PU foam so the strong gusts of wind couldn't lift them up. Also each tile is connected to the batten with a hook. We usually don't mortar the ridge but we did in this case because conservators demanded keeping the original look. Thank you for watching! 300 Year Old House Gets a New Roof - renovation / reconstruction Pt-1 lignum 2022-05-11 | This is the project I've been working on over the last couple of months. Turn on the CC for subtitles. We were sub contractors for "Strabag" company and our task was to make new wooden structure between ground and first floor, first floor and the attic and also the roof. Unfortunately I didn't film the part where we made the structures between the floors but I did the most interesting part, the roof. The house itself is located in the town of Primošten and I was told it was build over 300 years ago. During It's rich past, it was a military barracks, hospital, school, and finally a famous fish specialty restaurant in the fifties called "Vila Fenč". A smaller addition to the house was also built at this time. It closed in 1991 during the homeland war and was slowly decaying ever since.. Now it is getting back it's former glory! :) when completed, It will feature a luxury restaurant and 3 five stars apartments. The walls are only thing that was left when we arrived on the site, they are 50 cm thick, made from stone and mortar. The facade is made with great care but the core of the walls was made with whatever they could use, leftover bricks, roof tiles, small stone chips.. Modern standards required the parts of the house to be strengthened with reinforced concrete to meet modern seismic standards.Vertical and horizontal RC columns and beams have been done and they also poured RC slabs on top of our wooden structures to connect the walls to each other. All this greatly improved the seismic resistance of this building and still kept the original outside appearance. It also provided the strong base to which we could anchor our roof structure. Parts of the interior will be kept in it's original state and parts will be modern. The roof is made in glulam. Posts and central beam are 16x16 cm, rafters are 10x20cm and ties are 8x16cm. Original plan was to make the roof using our cnc robot but when we came to the job site and took the measurements, we realized it would be almost impossible. No two walls were parallel, there was no 90° angle to be found, roof slopes were different on each side and so on.. So we decided to bring the material and make it on site. Took a bit longer than originally expected, but I'm pleased how it turned out. Hopefully it will hold for the next three centuries ;) Part two will be up in about two weeks and will show traditional clay tile roofing.Thank you for watching! Making a Console Staircase - Pt1 steel lignum 2022-04-17 | No more ladders :) turn CC on for subtitles! We assembled the steel staircase which will be covered in wood when most of the interior work will be done. I made the stairs almost half a year ago when we were only starting with the house build but didn't install it because it would get in the way when moving the scaffolding and during the concrete pours of the upper floor. It waited on the construction site so it got a bit of rust here and there, but now when all that rough work is completed, we could finally assemble it. Each stair is made from 60x60x4 square tubes welded on 15x25cm 12mm thick steel plate. To connect the stairs to the concrete wall, we used 16mm threaded rods anchored with vinyl ester resin. The Roof is Going up! My house build Pt7 lignum 2022-03-26 | The roof is going up! Turn on the CC for subtitles.. Finally some timber for everybody who was waiting for the last 6 months:) The timber is In GL-24 class, posts are 10x24cm and the roof beams are 10x32cm and 12x32cm crossection, positions depending on the calculated loads. Posts were supposed to be 8x24cm but I decided to make grooves for the glass so I added two more centimeters in width. I didn't have time to install the horizontal beams that will separate the bottom and the top glass but will for the next video. Roof beams are 15 m long so they were too long for ordinary transport so I had to join them from two parts just above the central load bearing wall. The joint is traditional wedge but made on my cnc robot so it came out precise and snug. I was thinking about connecting the plates and the wood with steel dowels but in the end decided to go with bolts, The house will have an industrial look to it so the visible bolts will fit in nicely. As for the sheeting I used some used and some new shuttering boards. We planed and sanded one side and stained them in water based stain and a uv-resistant transparent top coat. The pattern of the boards is the same as glulam beams so they go together nicely. On top of that we spread the aluminium vapor barrier to keep it out of the insulation that will go on top of it.I hope you like this this project! Wooden Lounger Chair - latest design lignum 2022-03-06 | More than 4 years have passed since I made the first Lignum lounger. Design just slightly changed over the years, just stronger spine and spruce back rest instead of birch plywood but the way I make it changed a lot so I thought it would be cool to show how I make it today. This is the current way it is produced. This one is made from spruce, main spine is 10x8 cm made from 40 layers of 2mm thick veneer. Back rest is made from 2cm thick slats, 55 pieces total. Glue I use for the spine is two component melamine glue with long open time and for connecting the slats to the spine I use D3 pvac glue. Dowels are 8mm made from beech wood. My House Build Pt6- concrete pours and roof anchors lignum 2022-02-12 | CC on for subtitles! Finally we are close to finish with rough construction. I know you all wait for the wood but you will have to wait just a little longer:) The weather was surprisingly warm for this part of the year which was great for work but also feels somewhat unnatural knowing everything should be covered by snow these days.. We got the house ready for the roof, this video is full of concrete forming and concrete pours. I made steel connecting plates which will hold the roof and positioned them so that they are securely anchored in the concrete. They are made from 10 mm thick steel and are secured with four 12mm rebar rods to the concrete. Depending on the weather we mixed the concrete with sika low temperatures additive, It makes the concrete a little harder to work with because it sets faster but I'm quite happy how it turned out. For vertical walls and posts we mostly used 14mm rebar rods and 8mm stirrups, for horisontal beams it depends of the length but usually 16mm rods and 8mm stirrups. Beams above the walls were 12mm rods and again 8mm stirrups. I hope you like this this project! Making a Rebar Dining Table lignum 2022-01-22 | Inspiration for this table came from tying all that rebar for my house project:). With winter weather, I'm spending less time on the construction site so why not start on furniture for the house. For the base I used 6mm smooth rebar/dowels although regular rebar would work as well, I guess smooth will be easier to maintain. I made a jig on a table to place the bottom of the legs and the base to their right position. The steel base was made from 440x120x4mm steel pipes which I cut and welded into a rhomboid shape. I marked the position of each rod and then it was simply a matter of measuring the lengths of each rebar piece, cutting it and welding it to their marked position. All together, there were 112 rods of different lengths, all together approximately 100 meters. After all the welding , I spray painted the base with clear varnish for steel and other metals. Wooden tabletop was made from ash and mahogany. Mahogany was used as strips instead of wooden dowels, I thought it would look nice after trimming the edges of the table top. I planed each plank first with kuka robot and then with a planer. Grooves for the mahogany was also done by cnc robot. For gluing the pieces, I used one component polyurethane glue, It has great water resistant properties and it also expands to fill all the imperfections the robot may have done. After drying, I cnc milled the bottom of the tabletop in a shape of the steel base so it would sink in for about 1 cm. I sanded it first with belt sander 100grit and then with orbital sander 400 grit. I applied a few coats of water based varnish on both sides with light sanding in between each coat. I applied it with a brush. After drying, I connected the base to the top using 6x30mm screws. I hope you like this this project! Our house build Pt 5- brickwork finally done lignum 2021-12-24 | CC on for subtitles. Christmas is here and the brickwork is almost complete! Just a few blocks here and there.. Last week was sunny and relatively warm so we made the most of it.. In this part of the series we completed the hydro insulation of foundations on which we placed another layer of 5 cm expanded polystyrene, area close to the surface and above the ground level was insulated with 12 cm of xps. Xps was covered with dimpled drainage foil. Bottom of the canal was covered with 0.5cm gravel to create a 0.5% slope on top of which we placed a drainage pipe wrapped in geo-textile. Pipe is then covered with rough gravel. We removed the formwork under the floor slab from Part three video. We continued with brickwork up to the roof level. The contours of the house are now really visible, the roof will be single slope to the south side to maximize the area for the solar panels which I plan to install some day. Next step is to pour some more concrete and place the roof anchors. Wood for the roof and the south side glass wall is in the workshop and we plan to start cutting it to measure next week. Making a 5 String Padouk-Wenge-Oak Bass lignum 2021-12-04 | It has been a while since I posted something other than the house project I'm on right now so here is a bass to break it up a little bit.. :D We made this one for a customer, he only insisted on five strings and everything else was up to us. This one is made from wenge, oak, padouk, ebony and maple. Quite a lot of different species but they went together just fine. The body is made from oak and wenge in shape of our spring bass model while the head was custom. Neck is made from padouk and maple strips while the fretboard is made from hard ebony with two veneer layers of maple and wenge. We went for a clean look so no engravings and markings on the fingerboard this time, just a Lignum logo laser burned on to the body. Back electronics and battery covers are also made from wenge wood. harware we used for this build is EMG JX set, Schaller BM Light machine heads, Schaller 3D-5 bridge, Schaller S-locks, Daddario EXL 165-5 strings. We started building the second floor! - House build pt4. lignum 2021-11-13 | CC on for subtitles. Autumn is officially here. We are slowly making progress and doing work as the weather allows us. If it's nice and dry we do the water insulation around the foundations and if it's wet, we do the brickwork.. In this video you can see the last three weeks work, I also welded the stairs but decided to make a separate video on making them. Christmas is coming quickly and so is the deadline I set for having the house under the roof, I'm still not loosing hope ;). The brickwork is the same as on the ground floor, only difference is that there is no water insulation between the slab and the mortar for the first row of bricks. We are still going up quite a lot with these walls especially on the north side so I decided to pour the concrete as we build to make sure a random gust of autumn wind doesn't topple them over. As for the water insulation around the base of the house, we started by digging a a trench for water drainage pipe around the house down to the bottom of foundations and leveling the extruded polystyrene. We then filled the gaps where it was missing and chamfered the edges. Then we applied the primer and self adhesive water insulation with reinforcements on the corners. This part is still in progress and we still need to complete it all around the house and protect it with a layer of polystyrene and damp proof membrane. Our house build Pt3- walls and ceiling slab pour lignum 2021-10-23 | We finally poured the ceiling slab, It was today in the morning :) it was nice and calm pour unlike the ground slab during the summer heath where we almost didn't make it because of how fast the concrete was setting. In this video, you can see a lot of concrete work. We poured the posts and walls three weeks ago and we mostly did the form work and rebar in the last weeks. Weather is slowly moving from summer heath to autumn rains so we get less and less sunny days. We just hope the house will be under the roof by Christmas so we can do interior work during winter. The rebar meshes we used were q503 for the tension zone and q207 for compression zone with some aditional bars where needed. U shaped rebar was 10mm. Rebar in beams was 16 mm tension zone and 14 mm compresion zone, number of bars depends on the length of the beams. We still have to pour the compression zone of the longest beam, it will be done in a couple of days while the concrete is still new. My house build Pt2- ground floor brickwork and concrete formwork lignum 2021-10-01 | Second part of the house build, from water insulation to concrete form work of the ground floor. Turn the CC on for subtitles:)We started by mixing water insulation sealant and brushing it around the rebar anchors in three layers. space in between the anchors was first brushed with bitumen primer and then 4mm thick bitumen foil was melted on top of it. First layer of bricks was placed on top of leveled mortar layer. Mortar has to be almost perfectly leveled for this kind of blocks, they are cnc planed and their thickness doesn't deviate more than a tenth of a millimetre. Other layers of blocks are glued together with special polyurethane glue. This kind of block-work is a little bit more expensive than classic but it has 60 percent better thermal properties and is three time faster to work with, also much cleaner. After all the brick work was done, we tied all the rebar to its position and assembled the concrete forming. The blockwork went pretty fast and we did it in about five days but the rebar and form work took us almost three weeks. Hopefully the second floor will go much faster. Finally! I started building my own house. Pt1- foundations and concrete slab lignum 2021-09-10 | Finally the project I've been waiting for years, my house. I'l be filming the whole process from the start to finish and in this first episode of the series you can see the steps from marking the ground to concrete slab pour. I thought about revealing the 3d renders of it but I think I'ts better to see it going up bit by bit:)The house itself will be constructed in combination of 3 main materials, concrete, thermo block bricks and glulam wood. hopefully it will be very energy efficient and also look nice:) I don't know how many episodes there will be but I'l try to post as often as possible.I started by marking a contour where the top layer of 20-30 cm of surface soil should be removed. After that, my fiancee and I again marked the guide lines where foundations should be dug. Foundation trenches were then filled with 30 cm of ground up gravel and compacted. Compaction test is done afterwards to make sure the base is compacted enough. We then made rebar baskets and lowered them into trenches. We also positioned anchors for concrete posts and walls. Sides of footings were lined with hard extruded polystyrene. After the first pour, we trimmed the top 3-4 cm of polystirene into level plane and we made the formwork on top of it for the slab. Space between the footings was also filled with gravel and compacted. On top of it we placed 8cm of xps and polyurethane foam which we covered with plastic membrane. We placed the rebar mesh on top of it and poured the slab..I hope you like this first part of this project, many more will follow! Making Twin Summer Basses lignum 2021-08-23 | Simply by chance, we got two orders from two opposite sides of the planet almost at the same time for same bass model, one fretless righty and one fretted lefty. I thought it would be fun to make a production video of these mirror twins since they will probably never see each other again:)Design is a bit different than the last years original summer bass, mostly visible in the head stock shape and size, we also moved pickups a bit towards the bridge so they don't cut the moon contour. This time we went for american walnut wood for the hexagon end grain part of the body and red padouk for finger boards. Inlays are made from black ebony wood. back of the body and neck remained in maple. Hardware is the same in both basses, one in black, other in chrome. Schaller BM light tuners, 3d-4 bridge, S-locks. Pickups we used are Fishman fluence soapbar set for the lefty and EMG pjx set for the righty. GHS 3050m strings for the fret-less, D'addario exl165 strings for fretted. Finish on both basses is polished two component polyurethane high gloss, fingerboards are oiled with le tonkinois oil. Post and Beam House update lignum 2021-07-28 | Update on a latest house build, still a lot of work to be done to completion. Our job is still to install a larch siding after other contractor finishes the heath and water insulation.. A lot of different contractors are working on this house at the same time so I didn't have a chance to film all the details, just a bit here and there to give you an idea of the process. Process of robot Milling a Styrofoam Landscape Model lignum 2021-07-06 | A short time lapse video of making a landscape model using Kuka robots. Making a Five String Fretless Bass - Custom Neck Thru lignum 2021-06-18 | This bass will be shipped to a customer in a few days time so we have a few more days to play with it :D. Body is our spring bass design and the head is something new. Neck is made from wenge wood with white oak veneer. Body is American walnut and white oak combination. Finger board is made from black ebony and oak veneer strip. Markings and bass clef are milled and filled with white epoxy. Nut is made from whitened bone. Glue we used for neck thru block is "Patex" pvac and "titebond" for fingerboard. For the finish on this one, we used few coats of "timberguard" teak oil and bees wax. For the first time we used our new laser engraver and we love it! Hardware that we used in this build is: Schaller Bass BM tuners, 3D-5 bridge, S-locks strap buttons. D'Addario ETW92-5 strings. for electronics we used Fishman fluence 5-string Bass soapbar pickups combined with Schaller under bridge piezzo with Fishman powerchip preamp. Total weight of this bass is 4.2kg. It was a fun new build with a more natural wibe. Making a Fretless Custom Spring Bass - full build lignum 2021-04-18 | This bass was planned since last year and we finally shipped it to customer a week ago. He saw a head-stock that he liked from Dan Thompson from "Guns and guitars" so we gave our twist on the concept. The bass is 4 string frettless made from ash, maple, oak and ebony. Thumb-rest and fret-board are made from black ebony, wings from ash, and neck from maple. We blackened the oak veneer by cooking it in white vinegar with steel wool. Veneer was used to make electronics cover as well as thin lines throughout the neck and body. Markings on the fret-board are filled with epoxy resin mixed with white pigment and maple dust. Nut is made from bone. We used pvac glue for all the glue-ups on this project, "patex" for the body and neck and "titebond" for joining finger-board to neck. Truss-rod is a custom made for this bass, I didn't film it because it is the same for every guitar project we have done so far so if you are interested please check any of previous guitar videos :) After machining, bass was sanded with progressively finer sandpaper and 6 coats of polyurethane varnish were applied. First four primer coats were applied to fill all the pores and then after couple of weeks, two hard top coats were applied. in between each coat, the whole bass was sanded with 400 grit sandpaper. After last coat, everything is polished with 3 different paste grits. Fingerboard and thumb rest is oiled with "timberguard" teak oil. Hardware that we used in this build is: Schaller Da Vinchi Bass tuners, 3D-4 bridge, S-locks strap buttons. D'Addario ETW92 strings. for electronics we used SJCSX neck and 35TWX bridge pickups combined with BQC control and ABC active balance control from EMG. Total weight of this bass is 3.8kg. Making an Electric Black Fire Guitar - Full Build lignum 2021-02-06 | New year, new guitar project. This one is for Ivan Dečak, frontmen from Group "Vatra" ("Fire"). Throughout the video, You can hear them play on this very instrument :D .This build spans over the period of last couple of months.. We tried to keep the wood combination from spring guitar because the sound was great but also go for a different look, black stain under high gloss polish.The wood we used is american maple and mahogany veneer for the neck-thru core and black ebony for the fret-board and diamond tail piece. Pick-guard and battery cover is made from three layers of laminated mahogany veneer. Top of the body and head is covered with birch root veneer which really resembles small flames. fret-board Inlays are made from white epoxy. Nut is made from cow bone. For gluing we used pvac glue. After staining the guitar in black nitro stain, it was sprayed in 5 coats of polyurethane primer to fill all the pores. After each spray, the surface was sanded with 400 grit sandpaper. After 5 primer coats, I sprayed black burst along the edges, also lignum stencil was applied. After drying, 3 more coats of hard polyurethane finish were applied. For polishing, we used 3 progressively finer pastes until mirror finish was achieved. We used Schaller hardware, Fishman fluence electronics, jumbo frets and D'addario EXL 110 strings. Making an industrial oak and steel coffee table lignum 2021-01-06 | I made this table from 5x9cm (2 x 3 1/2") oak stickers used for drying lumber. After drying them for a while, it was time to turn them into something nice. This table is a first piece of furniture I'm making for my future house I'm planing to start building this year. I started by planing two sides of each slat on a jointer. Other two sides are planed down on a planer down to final dimensions of 4.5x7 cm. Some of them were quite curved so it took a while.. I used d3 polyvinyl acetate glue to glue the slats together into a block. Block was planed on a cnc. Sides were trimmed down and grooves for steel legs were also milled. Legs are made from 8x100mm hot rolled steel welded into rectangular shape. 8mm screws are welded to the underside of the rectangles and they hold the table board . All the corner welds were grinded down and left visible trough polyurethane matte varnish. Wood is sanded first with belt sander with 100grit sandpaper, then with orbital sander with200 grit and finally by hand in between coats of varnish with 240 grit. Production Process of Curved Beams. lignum 2020-12-07 | Video I filmed this summer of us working on a large curved glulam carport project. The plan was to release the two part video next year when the carport will be assembled but recent lock down situation made us reschedule our projects. I couldn't film what I planned for this month so I'm uploading this to keep my subscribers entertained as much as I can.. Curved glulam posts from this video will be a part of a structure which will cover 16 parking spaces in front of a wood research center. Each beam is 3m long with cross section of 10cmx40cm. Each lamella is 20mm thick. We removed almost all visible knots to get as clean as possible surface. Wood glue we used is two component melamine glue from akzo nobel. Holes drilled will be used to connect multiple curved beams into one box post. Production of wooden truss structure Pt.2 - On-Site Assembly lignum 2020-11-17 | Process of the on-site assembly of truss structure from Pt1. video. The structure consists of 20 main trusses spanning cca 12.5 meters. Wood is a spruce glulam in GL32 strength class with hidden steel that connects wooden elements. Pins and screws are 8.8 class. The old building that is being renovated will be the future veteran center. Structure assembly took us 10 days from delivery, to osb sheeting. Production of wooden truss structure Pt 1. lignum 2020-10-20 | Our latest glulam project we are currently working on. Video shows a production process of 12 meter roof trusses with hidden steel which will be assembled in near future. Each truss consists from top and bottom chords with 14x20cm, and webs with 12x12 cm cross section. Timber used is spruce glulam in gl32 strength class. Steel pins are 8.8 class. All steel pieces are galvanized. Each wooden interior beam was milled on a milling robot. Slits were milled using a robot mounted chainsaw or with a chain mortiser. Making a Summer Night Bass - Full Build lignum 2020-09-22 | Making a 2000 Year old bog oak and white ash bass guitar. Throughout the video, You can hear music samples played on this very instrument. For the last day of summer of 2020, a final guitar build from the four seasons series. We chose white moon and a star contrasting the dark honey comb body reminding us of clear starry summer nights . We started a couple of months ago by prepping the bone which we used as inlays for the star on the fret board and as a bone nut. After cooking, bone is cut into small blocks and submerged in gasoline cleaner fluid over the period of three weeks. After all the grease left the bone, inlays are cnc cut into star shape and then glued using superglue into slots on the fret board. Fret board is cut from a bog oak board which was drying for a couple of years. The body and the neck is made from dry white ash board which we first cut into pieces and left to dry and stabilize over 3 weeks. After gluing, the block is again left to settle for a couple of weeks to fervent future warping. Front of guitar also made from bog oak. Pieces are drying in the workshop for more than 3 years now and came perfect for this purpose. Each piece was cnc milled into hexagon shape and then cut into 16mm thick hexagons. Hexagons are glued together using epoxy mixed with graphite powder so all the cracks are filled black. Reason we used epoxy is because it doesn't cause warping as much as ordinary vinyl acetate glue does, especially when making thin end grain boards like this one. After setting, the block is cnc planed, milled into desired shape and glued again using epoxy resin to the main guitar block. Final shape of the bass guitar is milled using various flat end and ball end milling bits. Truss rod is made from 4mm cold rolled steel rods welded together using nuts as shown in the video. Truss rod is inserted into milled truss rod groove and covered with silicone to prevent rattling noises. Fret board is glued on to the neck, Head is sanded down to 14 mm thickness and the whole thing is prepped for coating. For this build, we used 5 coats of polyurethane pore filler followed by 4 coats of deBeer 8-114 polyurethane lacquer. Between each coat, the whole guitar is sanded and then left to rest for two weeks after the final coat. After two weeks, guitar is polished with progressively finer polishing pastes and assembled. We used Schaller bridge, machine heads and S-locks, EMG PJX pickups with electronics, jumbo frets and D'Addario strings. I really hope you enjoyed these guitar builds as much as I have.
