It becomes a very moving and powerful conversation and I am very thankful for it.
About Andrea Hiott: Andrea is a philosopher and advises various organizations such as Holon Labs and the Active Inference Institute. She is an author of numerous books linking mind and movement, and has long worked in areas of mobility. She is part of the Ecological Motoring Initiative, an organization which tries to imagine what forms of motoring and movement can meet the needs of the living planet within its means. She did her undergraduate work on Hegel and David Bohm. She has a Master degree in Neuroscience and her PhD is on Way-making, a new philosophy of mind. She is also the host of the Love & Philosophy series, Beyond Dichotomy, Forever Motoring, and the Desirable Unknown.
This engaging conversation delves deep into the philosophical and neurological exploration of asymmetry, flow, and the unity within the diversity of existence. Through the metaphor of a whirlpool, the intricate dance between differentiation and integration within consciousness and existence is discussed. Beginning with the enchanting metaphor of a whirlpool as emblematic of life's flow and transient nature, participants ponder how limitations and resistances give birth to beauty and form, tying this seamlessly to human existence. They explore the significance of asymmetry in the brain, the importance of intuition, imagination, and the dangers of a narcissistically driven society dominated by left-hemisphere thinking. The discussion touches on themes of poetry, nature, the sacred, and ultimately, the interconnectedness of life, suggesting that recognizing and embracing these connections enriches our understanding and experience of the world. The conversation sensitively concludes with reflections on life, death, and the perpetual influence of our existence on the flow of the universal consciousness.

- What is the calling of medicine?
- Is it not to heal human beings?
But what does it mean to heal?
- Is a human being just a body?
- Is the body just a machine?
- Is a doctor just a mechanic?
- Can machines substitute for human skill?
- Can they erode human skill?
- How should we think of death?
- What, after all, is a good life?
It’s unlikely we would all agree on the answers to these questions, but they do all need to be asked. And understanding the role played by lateralization in brain function may guide us towards what are at least better answers to these pressing questions.

It is often remarked that though it may seem that we face numerous global crises of different kinds – environmental, social, political, cultural, economic, psychological, and so on – these crises are interrelated. The term ‘metacrisis’ has been invented to describe this predicament. However these crises are not merely adventitiously interrelated because each has an impact on and reinforces each of the others – though that may be true – but because they share roots at a deeper level in a way of thinking about ourselves and the world. What are these roots? Hemisphere theory, deeply grounded as it is in Darwinism and subsequent neuroscientific research, shows us that a new, far more complex, and more nuanced, appraisal of the bipartite brain – the product of the last 30 years of research – brings new insights into the human condition. There are vitally important clues to the understanding of human cognition and motivation embodied in the structure of the brain. These clues help explain why certain apparently unrelated phenomena tend to occur together, why outcomes that appear paradoxical are in reality predictable, and why many attempts to remedy them will prove inadequate since they are tackling only the manifestations of a problem that we need to address at its root – both in the psyche of the individual and that of a civilisation viewed as a whole. ‘Know thyself’ commanded the Delphian oracle: we need urgently to learn to do so, and this synergy of philosophy and neuroscience appears to offer the most promising way.
Dr Iain McGilchrist is a Quondam Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, an Associate Fellow of Green Templeton College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and former Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospital, London. He has been a Research Fellow in neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore and a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Stellenbosch. He has published original articles and research papers in a wide range of publications on topics in literature, philosophy, medicine and psychiatry. He is the author of a number of books, but is best-known for The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World (Yale 2009); and his book on neuroscience, epistemology and ontology, The Matter with Things: Our Brains, Our Delusions and the Unmaking of the World (Perspectiva 2021).

This is neither a comprehensive theory of the topic, nor an approach to addressing it. The conversation was simply an opportunity to explore in real time how the speakers, with their different worldviews and pre-existing frameworks, would approach this deep and challenging domain. As Iain, John and Daniel all happened to be in Oxford with availability on a single afternoon, they had not discussed or prepared the approach at any significant length in advance. As a result, a shared understanding emerges only towards the very end of the film. The content is incomplete and partial, and should be viewed as a potential entry point to a far deeper conversation (which may or may not be recorded at a later date). A complete transcript can be found here:

Meaningful communication between two large bodies of work can take time, and becomes exponentially harder with three. This inherent challenge was understood in advance, but given the fundamental multipolarity of the dynamics of the metacrisis itself, it felt like a challenge worth accepting.

Dr. Iain McGilchrist, PhD, is a distinguished psychiatrist and author, celebrated for his insightful analysis of cerebral asymmetry and its far-reaching impact on human civilization, as detailed in his influential book "The Master and His Emissary." His recent work, "The Matter with Things," builds on these foundations, delving deeper into the relationship between the brain's structure and the complexities of reality, challenging our understanding of the interplay between matter and consciousness.

Iain McGilchrist and David Schindler respond to a question about a passage from Cs Lewis's book, The Discarded Image, then delved into a discussion of the passage and its implications for understanding the nature of God and the universe. They discussed intelligence, beauty, and goodness in the cosmos, and explored the idea that even non-animate aspects of the universe reveal intelligence, beauty, and complexity. They also touched on the idea that good can embrace evil, but evil cannot embrace good.
The speakers engaged in a wide-ranging discussion about the relationship between beauty, order, and the transcendent principle. They explored the idea that disorder and chaos can be incorporated into order to create something even more beautiful and profound, drawing on examples from art, philosophy, and theology. They also discussed the complex and multifaceted nature of intelligence, beauty and love and the importance of values in shaping our understanding of the world.

The online-event took place on February 3rd 2023, from 18:00-21:00 CET.
As McGilchrist notes: “In The Matter With Things, I search out what it is we have lost sight of, all that is there for us to see, if only we were not blinded to it: an inexhaustibly, truly wondrous, creative, living universe, not a meaningless, moribund mechanism. By bringing to bear up-to-the-minute neuropsychology, physics, and philosophy, I show not only that these are in no way in conflict with one another, but that they all lead us, time and again, to the same insights. And that this is not in opposition to, but rather corroborates, the wisdom of the great spiritual traditions across the world.
“I have chosen to approach it here by directing our attention, as it might seem at first, to one side: on the soul. I will argue that the sacred exists not simply in this or that thing—an object, a place, or an act—but in the relationship between whatever it is beyond ourselves that we recognize as sacred and that part of our being that has been traditionally referred to as the soul.”
In this 3-hour event, Thomas Steininger of evolve Magazine engages in dialogue with Dr Iain McGilchrist about The Brain, The Sacred and The Soul. This dialogue was the opening for a larger dialogue that included the participants. The unique distinction of all evolve LIVE! events is that participants are invited to join in dialogue and to be part of a dialogical investigation of the topic with each other and with their guest.

Lecture: What is the Matter with Things? Our brains, our delusions and the unmaking of the world – Iain McGilchrist
11:30 am Lecture: Recovering our humanity – Iain McGilchrist
2:00 pm David Lorimer interview and discussion with Iain McGilchrist on The Matter with Things: Our Brains, Our Delusions and the Unmaking of the World
3:00 pm Audience Q&A
Through this seminar, Iain McGilchrist explores the relevance of the hemisphere hypothesis in 2023 and asks, what is the matter with things? Where are we now? Can we really neglect the sacred and divine? Why, indeed, are we engaged in destroying everything that is valuable to us? Is it possible for us to recover our humanity?
The Matter with Things presents the most articulate and compelling argument for an alternative philosophy of life. Following the paths of cutting-edge neurology, philosophy and physics, McGilchrist reveals how each leads us to a similar vision of the world, one that is both profound and beautiful — and happens to be in line with the deepest traditions of human wisdom.
It is a vision that returns the world to life, and us to a better way of living in it: one we must embrace if we are to survive.
David Lorimer is a visionary polymath who is Programme Director of the Scientific and Medical Network, Editor of Paradigm Explorer and Chair of the Galileo Commission. His most recent books are A Quest for Wisdom and his collection of poems, Better Light a Candle.

Through this seminar, Iain will explore the relevance of the hemisphere hypothesis in 2023 and ask, what is the matter with things?
