My friend Susan Brearey shot this today in 110 degree heat somewhere in California. I've been thinking of Ralph the last few days, including a great musical gathering last night with a bunch of people who knew him.
I enjoyed working with Ralph on the movie Cold Mountain and a subsequent tour in 2004. Somewhere I have a picture of him with his hair full of pink daisies. One thing we did that didn't make it into the film (or the CD) was Ralph lining out a hymn and a bunch of us singing it. In the scene his voice was coming out of my head- a strange thing to see (although I only ever saw it when we were looking at dailies).
I'd known this song for many years before I met Ralph, but hearing him sing it every night for about six weeks on the road got his version pretty fixed in my mind. I barely knew him, but he made an impact on me, as on so many.
