The new @zeromotorcycles XB and XE electric dirt bikes represent a significant step toward eliminating the biggest downsides of electric motorcycles: battery range and cost. Zero flew me out to Texas to spend a day beating up their new electric dirt bike offerings, the Zero XE and Zero XB. Both of these Zero dirt bikes feature hot swappable batteries and are far less expensive than previous electric motorcycle offerings.
The Zero XB weighs about 150 lbs and retails for around $4300. I was convinced I was going to immediately crush this tiny-looking dirt bike under my immense weight, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it took all the abuse I could throw at it and had more than enough power to carry me up, over, and through every obstacle I threw at it.

In the afternoon, we swapped over to the bigger Zero XE electric dirt bike. This larger, more capable offering retails for $6500 and also features hot swappable batteries. I was blown away by the capability and overall build quality of the XE. We tackled some technical rocky climbs, singletrack, and a ton of two track with sand galore and this thing never missed a beat. I had an absolute blast riding this thing around the hills and rocky terrain of Central Texas.

There are still a lot of questions and concerns about electric motorcycles, with range anxiety chief among them...but I am very pleased with the progress that these two new Zero dirt bikes represent. Hot swappable batteries mean not having to wait for a charge and the much lower MSRP of these bikes means that cost is no longer the deciding factor when comparing them to similar gas powered bikes.
