The Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation means that over a billion people believe they are literally eating the body and blood of Jesus Christ every Sunday. Does it matter that the early Romans heard this and called it cannibalism?
When you look past the ritual familiarity of Sunday communion, what the Catholic Church officially teaches is striking. The Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 made transubstantiation formal dogma: at consecration, the bread and wine physically become the body and blood of Jesus Christ, unchanged in every observable quality but no longer bread and wine at all. The scriptural foundation rests on John 6:53 and the Last Supper accounts, and the Church has never softened the claim.
