The Earles fork, named after its creator Earnest Earles, was patented in 1953 and first adopted by BMW in 1955.
Also known as a leading-link-fork, the Earles was a very popular choice for sidecar rigs thanks to its rigidity and anti-dive qualities.
Ultimately motorcycle design moved away from the Earles fork and back to the more traditional telescopic style in the interest of reducing unsprung weight, and minimizing manufacturing cost.
Regardless, you can still find a variation of the Earles Fork today on the Ural Gear Up.
