Table saw safety is something every woodworker takes seriously — and today I’m showing you a simple DIY push block that offers far more control and safety than the plastic push sticks that usually come with a table saw.
This design features a retractable back piece that automatically adjusts to the thickness of the material you’re cutting. I built two versions of this push block:
A thin version for narrow and thin stock
A thicker version for larger boards and heavier cuts
Both versions are made from MDF, making them cheap, fast to build, and easy to replace when they eventually get damaged — which is exactly how a good push block should work.
In this video, I take you step by step through the build process, show all dimensions, and then compare my DIY push blocks to:
A standard plastic push stick
A commercial-style push block similar to the GRR-Ripper
The retractable back edge keeps constant pressure against the workpiece, helping guide it cleanly past the blade while keeping your hands safely away.
