After more than 10 years of trying, we finally made it to White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico — and it turned out to be cooler than we expected… in more ways than one.
Not only was it literally cold during our winter visit, but the landscape itself is one of the most fascinating we’ve ever explored.
The dunes at White Sands aren’t made of ordinary sand. They’re made of gypsum crystals, which create a brilliant white landscape that reflects light in incredible ways and even feels cool under your feet. As we explored the dunes, we learned how these unique dunes form, discovered some of the surprising plant life that survives here, and wandered through the surreal white landscape as the sun set across the basin. But the adventure through this part of New Mexico had plenty more surprises along the way — from Hatch chile country and fossil-filled desert trails near Las Cruces to hiking in the Organ Mountains and diving into the region’s fascinating rocket and space history.
New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment for a reason.
And White Sands might be one of the most enchanting landscapes in the entire state.
