It's been a year or so since I tried to boot IRIX on my SGI Octane, and in the meantime, I've picked up two Sun Ultra 10 workstations. Time for a Unix stream!
I have an upgrade for the Octane's graphics card (which hopefully works, I'm slightly out of the return period), and I will risk the remove/insert cycle on the compression connectors in order to install it. I also have a few ideas of things to try to get the Octane booting IRIX over the network, as I don't have a CD-ROM drive for it. (No, I can't use a Blue SCSI without adapters I don't own, as the Octane's has a Wide SCSI bus.)
Speaking of CD-ROM drives, the Ultra 10's CD-ROM drive will hopefully work to boot a period-correct version of SunOS/Solaris. And if that fails, I might be able to try a Blue SCSI.
Will the Octane IRIX? Will the Ultra 10 SunOS or Solaris? You'll have to watch to find out!
Fun fact: the compression connectors in the SGI Octane are rated for six insert/remove cycles. Yes, you read that right, only six.
