The Red Onion Jazz Band - Creole Rhapsody (March 2, 1969 - October 5, 1969)
This top-notch Australian group is a different "Red Onion Jazz Band" than the identically-titled combo that recorded for Biograph during the same period. A particularly strong Dixieland band flexible enough to also play swing, these Aussies boast high musicianship, exciting ensembles and spirited renditions of classic jazz. On their GHB CD the septet (which is augmented by guests on three songs) is heard at its best on such numbers as "Royal Garden Blues," "You Can Depend on Me" (using a catchy Fletcher Henderson arrangement), "Cabin In The Pines," "Panama" and an effective revival of Duke Ellington's "Creole Rhapsody." The vocals (mostly by trombonist Bill Howard) work well and the soloists (particularly trumpeter Brett Oggulden and Richard Miller on clarinet and tenor) are excellent. Highly recommended to dixieland fans.
