A copper wire if burned in an oxidative flame covers itself with a black layer of copper oxide (CuO). When hot, if the wire is immersed in a primary or secondary alcohol, the copper oxide oxidizes the alcohol, the oxide itself being reduced to metallic copper. The black copper wire is covered at the end with a shiny copper layer.
