Imagine a race of dwarves so deeply traumatized by the underground that stepping into a cave gives them severe panic attacks. Meet the Fianawar Dwarves of the Steamwall Mountains. Once master deep-miners, their entire world shattered during the Cataclysm. Rivers of molten lava incinerated their kingdoms. When they tried to resettle, fire demons dragged their scouting parties into the dark, creating a permanent, mass cultural phobia of the deep earth. Today, they are completely agoraphobic. They live exclusively on the surface, but they hate it. To block out the open sky, they build windowless stone boxes that mimic their lost caverns. Because they can't go underground, they run massive open-pit strip mines. This gives them an endless supply of ore, outfitting every single citizen in masterwork field plate and chain mail.
