Fireworks explode overhead. Lanterns shimmer and sway above laughing crowds. Smiling faces fill the streets of Saigon, and hundreds of South Vietnamese soldiers mingle around, their rifles set aside for Tet, the Lunar New Year.

In the middle of it all stands an American soldier, still and uneasy. He scans the street. Something isn’t right.

Then, beneath the fireworks, he hears a sharp crack. Not from the sky. From the ground. He turns, but all he sees are the people around as they keep on cheering.

Suddenly, the ground shudders as an explosion rips through the streets. Panic erupts. Soldiers, civilians, and children start running in every direction. This isn’t possible; the enemy is dug in near the border, days away.

Then, he sees it: a man in civilian clothes standing idle among the chaos, eyes locked on him. He starts to approach, pulling out a rifle from beneath his coat. The soldier understands: they’re not coming, they’re already among them.
