The Norwegian Elkhound aka The Norsk Elghund is Noway's National Treasure but he's also a fierce hunter of moose, elks and even BEARS! Wolf blood runs through his veins from a mating between a female wolf and his primitive relative 5000 years ago making him 'in theory' a mini wolfdog. The Vikings would use the Elkhound on their boats and in their villages, as well as did the whole of Norway. More recently hunters use them to hunt moose and elk. The Grey Elkhound is let off leash and he runs ahead alerting the hunter to where the elk is, his short legs making him nimble between the dangerous hooves of the animals. The rarer and quiet black elkhound is used to track game on leash. These dogs are feisty, intelligent, loyal and energetic. Their looks are deceiving, as they need an owner with an outdoors lifestyle and mentality to keep them happy.
Today I fly to Norway to meet Ken Stornes, famous Norwegian outdoorsman and athlete and his elkhound Ronja. I also meet Norweigian Elkhound club: Jotunfjell-Fjordane Elghundklubb who have brought along quite a few black and grey elkhounds for me to meet. To do this, we are sat on the largest Viking Ship in Norway, 'The Myklebust' at Sagastad, Nordfjordeid, with Viking warrior friends who have joined me 'a clad' in traditional Viking gear. What an episode we have for you today!
