A documentary crew follows a First Nation Chief as he begins to develop radical ideas about sovereignty.
Chief Chucky Ribbonleg of Deep Lake First Nation has had enough. No longer willing to operate under the laws imposed by the Canadian government, Chucky declares Deep Lake its own sovereign nation — and immediately sets off a bureaucratic firestorm within his own administration.
At the center of the chaos is Monica Leprete, the no-nonsense National Director for the Regional Education Nourishment Centre — and Chucky's sister — who finds herself navigating a paperwork nightmare she never signed up for. Alongside her are Sarge, the nation's impossibly laid-back sheriff; Sammy, the bootlegging border guard; Jill, Monica's endlessly energetic assistant; and Vanessa, the Chief's stone-faced accountant. A film crew captures all of it.
The Nation is a sharp mockumentary comedy about Indigenous sovereignty, bureaucratic absurdity, and what it really means to govern yourself.
