This story was written by Mr. Wardon Allan Curtis. It first appeared in Pearson's Magazine, September of 1899, and as far as I can tell, it invented the trope of living prehistoric animals turning up in on the western frontiers of North America (as seen later in The Monster of Partridge Creek, The Beast of Hollow Mountain, and The Valley of Gwangi). I am reading it from Creatures of Another Age: Classic Visions of Prehistoric Monsters, an excellent anthology edited by Mr. Richard Fallon.
