Historical Details of the LEGO® Icons Endurance Set
In 1914, legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton purchased a ship named Polaris and renamed it after his family motto: Endurance. This vessel would carry him and his crew to Antarctica as part of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, aimed at making them the first people to cross the frozen continent.
Unfortunately, the expedition failed, and the Endurance became trapped in the ice, eventually sinking to the bottom of the Weddell Sea—where it remains remarkably well-preserved today, thanks to the frigid waters.
And while the expedition didn’t achieve its original goal, its legacy is both profound and undeniable. To this day, both Endurance and Shackleton continue to inspire awe and curiosity.
It is therefore fair to say that Endurance is the latest engineering marvel to join the LEGO® Icons collection. To learn more about this new set, we spoke with its designer, Hans Burkhard Schlömer.
With three towering masts, 10 full sails, a fluttering red ensign, and intricate rigging, the LEGO® Icons Endurance set is a dream come true for ship enthusiasts. The detailed deck features multiple levels connected by ladders, with removable sections that provide access to the port and starboard cabins, as well as the ship’s steam engine.
“We focused on the most interesting areas,” explains Hans. “Sir Shackleton’s cabin, the scientist’s cabin, and the engine room with the triple-expansion steam engine.”
The set also includes four detachable lifeboats, a chained anchor, and a steering wheel that controls the rudder.
To complete the design, Hans boldly ventured into new territory by creating something special for the interior.
“For the scientist’s cabin, we made a new printed element: a map of Antarctica.”
