*The Odyssey Isn’t Just an Adventure*

The Odyssey is widely hailed as the ultimate adventure story, but it is much more than that. Its deeper significance is that it functioned as Greece’s foundational educational manual, with Homer regarded by Socrates, Aristotle, and others as the “educator of Hellas.”
This breakdown examines The Odyssey through a fresh lens, connecting ancient literary themes to contemporary storytelling.
Homer’s education is not primarily about knowledge but psychagogy—a journey of the soul that forms passions, appetites, and reason—so Odysseus’ encounters symbolize battles against disordered desire.
The episode outlines seven overlaps between The Odyssey and Plato’s Republic: appetite versus reason; education and imitation (Telemachus); justice; fitness to rule through wisdom; homecoming as the restoration of self/order; appearance versus reality; and the highest good as a rightly ordered life under the gods.
