Many chronic diseases appear very different on the surface, yet they often share common underlying reasons. One researcher believes the most overlooked commonality is copper and its role in energy production.
Today, I'm excited to share my conversation with researcher and educator Morley Robbins, whose work explores the central role of energy metabolism, copper, and mitochondrial function in human health.
At the heart of his perspective is copper, a mineral he believes plays a central role in mitochondrial function, iron metabolism, oxidative stress, and countless other biological processes that allow our cells to generate energy and maintain balance. Whether you ultimately agree with every conclusion or not, I think you'll find this to be one of the most thought-provoking conversations we've had on the podcast.
This episode was first released in Feb 2022
In this episode, Morley and I discuss:
• Why he believes copper is one of the most important and overlooked minerals in human physiology
• The relationship between copper, iron metabolism, mitochondria, and cellular energy production
• Why he sees copper-driven energy deficiency as the common denominator underlying chronic disease
• How oxidative stress develops when normal mineral balance is disrupted
• Why Morley argues that supporting energy production should take priority over simply targeting symptoms
• The historical research that shaped his perspective on copper metabolism
• Why he believes many conventional ideas about iron metabolism deserve to be reconsidered
• The role of mitochondria in maintaining resilience, metabolism, and overall health

![Jason Prall: What I Learned Traveling to the Worlds Healthiest Blue Zones
What if the secret to living a long, healthy life wasnt found in supplements, biohacking, or gene editing, but in the simple wisdom of people whove already done it?
This week, I sit down with Jason Prall, filmmaker and longevity researcher, whos been traveling to the worlds Blue Zones to uncover what centenarians actually do to live past 100 with energy, purpose, and joy.
Jason has been on a quest to answer a question that most of us may not think to ask: Why are 90-year-olds in Sardinia, Okinawa, and Ikaria thriving with vitality while so many people in the Western world feel like theyre falling apart after 60?
His documentary, The Human Longevity Project, captures the real stories, the real food, and the real lifestyle of people whove cracked the code on healthspan, not just lifespan.
In this conversation, youll discover that longevity isnt complicated. Its not about maximizing efficiency or chasing the next health trend. Jason brings a refreshing perspective that challenges what the modern wellness industry is telling you.
This episode was initially released in Sept 2017
In this podcast, Jason and I discuss:
Healthspan vs. Lifespan: The real goal isnt reaching 150 - its getting older in a healthy, functional state without medications, pain, or cognitive decline.
Diet Isnt About Dogma: Blue Zone residents eat mostly plant-based diets with seasonal meat consumption (like pork once a year in December), not extreme paleo or vegan protocols.
Movement, Not Exercise: Centenarians dont do CrossFit or interval training; they move naturally all day long, walking 40 kilometers to accomplish daily tasks.
Community Is Everything: 100% of the centenarians Jason interviewed said the same thing: find peace with people around you and build strong relationships - its non-negotiable for longevity.
Purpose Changes Everything: A 94-year-old woman in Loma Linda stays vibrant because shes learning violin. Purpose doesnt have to be grandiose; it just has to keep you going.
Sleep Comes Naturally: When you live without artificial light and constant stimulation, sleep issues disappear.
Circadian Rhythm Is Massive: Over 1,000 genes in the thyroid alone are regulated by light cycles. Every cell in your body operates on the light cycle, not on your productivity schedule.
Simplicity Beats Optimization: Blue Zone residents dont maximize efficiency or hack their biology. They live simply, slowly, and with gratitude for what they have.
Gratitude Is Protective: When you have access to everything year-round, nothing feels special. Seasonal eating and cyclical living create natural gratitude and appreciation.
Natures Laws Cant Be Broken: Many modern innovations, from leaf blowers to gene editing, violate the laws of nature. Living in alignment with nature is the real answer to longevity.
