The Herculoids is an American Saturday-morning animated series created and designed by Alex Toth and produced by Hanna-Barbera. It premiered on CBS on September 9, 1967. The original run consisted of 18 episodes, which aired through 1969. In 1981, 11 new episodes were produced as part of Space Stars.
Plot:
The series follows the space-barbarian family—Zandor, Tara, and their son Dorno—who defend their planet alongside their powerful creatures known as the Herculoids: Zok (a laser-shooting dragon), Tundro (a space rhinoceros), Igoo (a rock ape), and the shape-shifting Gloop and his son Gleep. Together, they battle invading robots, mad scientists, mutants, and villains such as the Faceless People, Destroyer Ants, Raider Apes, Mutoids, Arnoids, Zorbots, Mekkano mechanical men, and the plant-like Ogs.
Trivia:
The Herculoids later appeared in anthology series including Hanna–Barbera’s World of Super Adventure, Space Stars, and Super Adventures on Cartoon Network and Boomerang.
They were also featured in several comic book series: Hanna-Barbera Super TV Heroes (1968–69), Marvel’s TV Stars (1978), DC’s Cartoon Network Presents (1997–99), and the 2016 DC series Future Quest, alongside characters like Jonny Quest and Space Ghost.
On June 14, 2011, Warner Archive released The Herculoids: The Complete Series on DVD as part of the Hanna–Barbera Classics Collection.
