What does it really mean to "wait upon YaHuWaH"? Is Scripture simply telling us to be patient, or have we missed the richness of what the Hebrew word is actually communicating? In this study, we uncover the profound meaning of קוה (qawah) and discover why "waiting" in the Hebrew Scriptures is far more active, intimate, and powerful than most of us have ever been taught.
The Hebrew word qawah is often translated simply as wait, but it also carries the ideas of hopeful expectation, looking intently toward someone, and even the imagery of twisting strands together to form a strong cord. I make the case that this gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to wait upon YaHuWaH—not passively, but by binding the very threads of our hearts to Him in unwavering emunah, hope, and expectation.
Together we follow this theme through the Scriptures, allowing the Hebrew text to illuminate passages that have inspired believers for generations.
In this teaching we explore:
• Psalm 27:14, reading the Hebrew and examining David's repeated exhortation to qawah upon YaHuWaH.
• Psalm 37:7–9 and verse 34, where those who wait upon YaHuWaH are promised that they will inherit the earth while the wicked are cut off.
• Zephaniah 3:8, where YaHuWaH calls His people to wait for Him until the day He rises to judge the nations.
• Isaiah 40:31, revealing that those who qawah upon YaHuWaH renew their strength, mount up with wings like eagles, run without growing weary, and walk without fainting.
We also explore the remarkable statement in Genesis 49:18:
"I have waited for Your salvation, O YaHuWaH."
