The gelatinous cube in B/X D&D isn't a joke monster — it's the most precisely engineered entry in the 1981 Basic Set, and its ten-foot dimensions are the mechanic, not the flavor text.

Moldvay drew B/X dungeon maps at ten feet per square. He wrote the rule that says two or three characters can fight side by side in a ten-foot corridor. Then he wrote a monster that fills that exact volume, wall to wall and floor to ceiling.
This one goes line by line through the B/X Basic Set entry — surprise on 1-4 against a baseline of 1-2, the thirty-foot torch radius that does the hiding for it, Move 60' set to the speed of a fighter in metal armor carrying treasure, paralysis for 2-8 turns against a wandering monster check every 2 turns, and the Number Appearing line that proves the cube was never meant to sit in a room.
Sources are the Moldvay B/X Basic rulebook (1981) and the D&D Rules Cyclopedia (1991), which reprints the entry without changing a single number.
The Tavern Rules: We’re here for B/X and OSR gaming. I use AI as a tool to help organize and format my notes, but every ruling and opinion is 100% Tenkar. Keep it civil, keep it old-school, or the bouncer will show you the door.
