The European Union plans to boost financial resilience across the bloc by launching a digital euro.
It is a means of pushing back against non European payment platforms, largely dominated by US companies such as Mastercard and Visa.
Since Donald Trump returned as US President, there are also concerns the country could use its networks to halt payments or freeze assets in some countries.
The European Central Bank says the digital euro won’t replace cash and coins, but will help people make secure payments online.
A pilot of the scheme will be launched next year and to test the digital currency, the EU has recruited some of the project’s biggest critics.
