"When you do the roll-up, the end of the roll-up is the strongest note. It's not - it's E flat, F, a little light touch on that."
DO THIS AT THE PIANO TONIGHT
- Find any chromatic roll-up in something you play. In this lick it is E flat, F, F sharp, G with fingers one, two, three.
- Play it once the way you probably play it now, with every note the same weight. That is the sound you are trying to get rid of.
- Now play the same four notes and put the weight on the LAST one. The E flat and the F are a light touch, almost brushed. The G is the note you actually mean.
- Play it both ways back to back until you can hear the difference without thinking about it. That is the whole lesson.
WHY THIS ONE CHANGE MAKES A RUN SOUND PROFESSIONAL
A roll-up is not four equal notes. It is one note with three notes leading into it. The lead-in notes are there to get you somewhere, and the note you land on is the one the listener actually hears.
When every note in a run comes out at the same volume, the ear cannot tell where the phrase is going, so the whole thing reads as a technical exercise instead of a musical line. Put the weight on the arrival note and the same fingering suddenly has a direction and a destination.
This is the difference between a player who has learned the notes and a player who sounds like they mean them, and it costs you nothing but a little attention in your right hand. It works on jazz roll-ups, blues runs, worship fills and any scale passage that lands on a chord tone.
