They’re called The Dustbowl Revival, but “dustbowl” should be read as style, not politics. It’s more Mardi Gras than “Grapes of Wrath.” You could see this band with all their belongings on the back of a wagon heading west, but it would be a party. Their Americana swing gets you tapping your toes and raising your glass. No one’s down on their luck here.
Like many a Midwestern escapee, the band’s Chicagoan founder, Zach Lupetin, sought greener pastures in California. The group assembled in the beach town of Venice and encompassed a wide range of instrumentalists — the band’s sound includes clarinet, tuba, washboard and a bass made from a canoe oar, to go along with more traditional stringed instruments and drums. They grew to eight people. In the Garage, Dustbowl included Lupetin on guitar, Liz Beebe on the mic and ukelele, Daniel Mark on mandolin, Connor Vance on fiddle, Matt Rubin on trumpet, Ulf Bjorlin on trombone, James Klopfleisch on bass and Josh Heffernan on drums.
There’s a French Quarter mischievousness in the way this band shades its tunes. You can hear it in their Second Story set, which included “Lampshade On,” “Bright Lights” and the traditional “Down by the Riverside.” “Lampshade” is best taken with a whiskey, if you’re into that sort of thing.
When Zach and Liz sat down for a talk with Quentin, it was as entertaining as the music.
