This video is a summary of american interventions in south and central american countries between 1948 and 1991, aka during the cold war. I have a look at cases from a wide range of countries and count up the human toll american foreign policy showed in this period. I specifically mention the cases of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Paraguay, Cuba, Dominican Republic,Brazil ,Bolivia,Chile, Argentina,Nicaragua,Panama and Operation condor and eventually conclude the likely death toll of american involvement.

Hello everybody. As you may or may not know I made a video on the cold war from a leftist point of view and it became my most popular video so far. So, it is kind of unfortunate that I completely left out south and central America in that video. Particularly all of the American involvement that went on and the surprising lack of soviet involvements.
So, this video will look at what happened in this region between 1948 and 1991. If you are a leftist you know about the fact that the United states kept starting coups against socialist or just vague leftist Latin American nations during the cold war and set up dictatorships in order to support the interests of private capitalists.
In this video I will tell the stories of American interventions in this region chronologically country by country through the entire cold war, with a special emphasis on the suffering it caused in these countries. As such I will be counting how many people were killed by American involvement. And at the end we will add it all up and….then we’ll know I guess.
And I am fully aware that having a death count will mean my video is 100% demonetised and possibly restricted to some ages or in some regions. That’s why at this point I would like to thank my patreons for paying me so I can make videos that youtube doesn’t like. If you enjoy this video and my channel please consider donating as well. Anyways, it’s not always easy to determine how many deaths can be attributed to American interventions and I fully respect if you disagree with my methods here but this is how I am going to reach my numbers and yes you are fully allowed to use the youtube chapter feature to skip the rest of the intro. First of all if the united states funds a militant uprising and the rebels kill 500 people then I will attribute those deaths to the American intervention.
And of course if the CIA supports a coup and that coup kills people, I will count those people as victims of the American intervention. And if the regime the US propped up kills communists by throwing them out of helicopters I will also attribute those deaths to America, since if the US hadn’t set up that fascist regime the people wouldn’t have been killed by it.
Crucially I will mostly mention coups that succeeded for the sake of time, so if there was an American sponsored uprising that failed there is a chance I won’t mention it.
Of course, there is a more fundamental issue, how will I go about getting the numbers? There are often large disagreements about how many people died in CIA sponsored uprisings. The US tends to aim low and the country it happened in tends to aim high, unless the US supported regime is still in charge.
