The UESC Marathon's colonists would settle on Tau Ceti, but they would eventually become plagued by a mysterious contagion. This endlessly mutating plague known as Telomyces Mosaica would start by destroying the colony's food production and would then mutate to infect the colonists directly. What's more, the contagion's spread appears to have been specifically targeted to disrupt and destroy the colony. Something also appears to have tampered with the AIs of New Cascadia as they made their efforts to save the colonists from the disease.
