In 2014, actiivists of all ages, ranging from First Nations people to established Vancouver residents and new Canadians, ascended Burnaby Mountain in Canada's third largest city. There they made camp on the proposed route of a future pipeline. They were willing to do whatever it took to keep the project from going forward, a necessity in their view to protect this area for unceded Coastal Salish people for future generations.
Their grit and tenacity is on full display as they face down the RCMP's efforts to tear down the camp. Director David Goldberg captures the intense conviction that was central to the Burnaby Mountain protest. The Caretakers provides food for thought on this project that settlers, First Nations and even local mayors oppose with its substantial risk to the environment.
