Scholars reject the idea that Christianity copied pagan “dying and rising god” myths because those ancient myths were mainly symbolic explanations for seasonal agricultural cycles. In these stories, gods represented natural forces like rain, drought, and fertility. For example, the god Baal was said to “die” during drought seasons and “return to life” when the rains came back, symbolizing the yearly cycle of nature rather than a real historical event.
These myths usually took place in a vague, distant past and were not tied to specific historical times or places. By contrast, the resurrection of Jesus was presented by early Christians as a real event that happened within living memory and was not connected to agricultural seasons or natural cycles. Because of these differences, the story of Jesus’ resurrection does not fit the same pattern as ancient Near Eastern resurrection myths.
