The temperature inside the coffin of ice is negative fifteen degrees Celsius. Anna Bågenholm can't move her arms. She can't move her legs. She can't feel her fingers anymore, hasn't felt them for what might be twenty minutes, might be an hour. Time has become slippery, unreliable. What she can feel is the water pressing against her face, so cold it feels like acid eating through her skin. Her head is trapped in an air pocket no bigger than a motorcycle helmet, wedged between the underside of the ice and the rocky streambed below. Above her, eighty centimeters of solid ice. Around her, the Kjøsnesfjorden stream, flowing at two degrees Celsius. Inside her, a body temperature that has dropped to something no human being should survive.
