AI turned out to be the forcing mechanism that got the design system properly written down.
Documentation is the work that always gets deprioritized when there is feature work to do. Then the agents arrived and could not read intent out of anyone's head, and suddenly there was a reason to finish it.
What that looks like now: a guidance folder in the Tanzu Hub repo, with subfolders for components, patterns and page templates. An MD file beside each component saying how and when to use it, written for the AI to read and understand. And a storybook-style showcase site with a live demo of every custom component next to the MD file that describes it.
His word for having been forced into it is "satisfying."
