I've bought a grand total of 3 books from Amazon because they were independently published and it was the only place to acquire them within Canada.
I've also taken to avoiding Indigo for gen0cidal reasons.
"Books know no limits or borders, they create longings and unexpected passions, they pose more questions than answers. They represent the unruly world, filled with contradictions and complications, a world that threatens the totalitarian mindset by being beyond its control."
"Readers, of course, have no formal organization to promote truth, to bring about change. But they number in the billions. They range across the spectrums of profession, background, gender, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation. Collectively, their power would be immense. Every writer who is censored, jailed, or tortured and murdered; every reader who is deprived of reading the books she wants; every bookstore, library, museum, or theater that closes; every book that is censored or removed from schools and libraries; every art, music, or literature program canceled in our schools and other institutions- these should all remind us of our responsibility."

Celebrating Pride is Su*c*de Prevention.
Some of my favourite quotes from this book:
"Some boys are as fleeting as the memory of rainwater during a wet spring"
"I had almost forgotten that all my experiences added up to a normal life"
"It's hard not to marvel at how poetic you are about your anguish, but maybe that's the queer condition, amirite?"

(2 locations in Winnipeg and 1 in Saskatoon)
I say small but they are in fact, possibly, the largest independent book store in Canada with approximately 24,000 square feet of space at the Grant Park (Winnipeg) location. They are family-oriented and strongly value community. Being Canadian they also put a strong focus on Canadian authors and publishers. You can even easily search their website for Canadian content and I love that for me as my goal the last few years has been to try to read more Canadian. They also offer a variety of book boxes with a book and fun goodies inside. I'm low-key in love. My husband knows.
Ironically, two days after filming this my husband asked if I'd like to go back to Winnipeg this summer. Um, yes please. (but the world is expensive so we will see.)

Give your kids diverse books. I know kids are stubborn and only want to read one thing (I see and appreciate you horse girls) but if you want to create a well-founded and empathetic member of society, diverse books will do the trick. Kids DESERVE to see themselves in media, including in literature, and kids seeing ALL KINDS of kids is going to make everything better for everyone.

Extra thoughts not in the video:
-Ali Hassan's sweater from day 1 is a poem. He has a post about it on his instagram.
-Mirian voted for The Future on day 1 but Denison Avenue on day 2 when both books were an option to vote for in her tiebreaking vote.
-In Tea Mutonji's final day message of encouragement to Kudakwashe Rutendo she says "seek disruption" and I thought at this point we all have seen Glass Onion and I think very little of both of them now.
I said what I said.

Yeah, Shelved has been compared to all of these. It premiered in April 2023 and there is still no word on a second season and I am terrified. I want it. Gimmie.

I have truly loved that twirling man since he wrote for Flare magazine.
