When the Pharisees complained that Jesus ate with sinners, He saw an opportunity to teach profound spiritual truths and help them see that their own hearts needed healing. He taught them using parables of a lost sheep, a missing coin, and a rebellious son. Because the Savior never explicitly told His listeners who to identify with in these stories, He invited them "to find relevance in His teachings—to discover what He wants us to learn and what we may need to change". This training video helps Early Morning Seminary teachers guide their students to find themselves in the scriptures and bridge the gap between ancient doctrine and modern life.
In this video, you will learn how to:
- Recognize the Need: Understand that "some learners don’t see why some truths matter to them" and proactively think about how the scriptures can be "meaningful and useful in their circumstances".
- Ask Connecting Questions: Help learners see the relevance of the doctrine by asking questions like “How can this help you with something you are experiencing now?” or “What difference can this make in your life?”
- Create an Open Environment: "Listen to those you teach. Allow them to ask questions", and actively encourage your students to make connections between the doctrine and their own lives.
- Share Your Witness: Don't hesitate to "share how you have found relevance to your own life in what you are teaching".
- Invite the Spirit: By helping students find personal application, you can "invite the Spirit to teach learners individually how the doctrine can make a difference in their lives".
