Initially used the Transistor Piano patch from Motif. My friend DM Kahn heard it and said he was getting Dracula vibes. I realized it did have a little too much creep to it.
Kahn had been encouraging me to use my old upright piano in my recordings. Although it hasn’t been tuned for a while, I decided to mic it up and overdub it. Helena Holleran & Chuck Treece. Written by Roy AyersJah Mex2023-07-07 | A reggae tribute to a classic by American funk, soul, and jazz composer/vibraphone player, Roy Ayers.
A few months back when Chuck Treece was in town from the East Coast he met up with me and engineer, Hayden Hanson at Tube Town Recording Studio in San Clemente, CA. Within one session, Chuck tracked drums, bass and lead guitar.
After tracking lead vocals, I heard my friend Helena Holleran's voice already signing on top of my so I called her, asked her if she was down and she said absolutely. She was the missing vocal link for sure.
Only thing missing was a steezy rhythm guitar skank and my friend Albert Hurtado was on the top of my list for this one. Hayden sent over the stems to Albert and the next day we got the goods!
Aside from mixing and mastering this track, Hayden also laid down background vocals along with Chuck and myself, crowd vocal style with the three of us on one mic, and various tracks.
We had a serious streak of cloudy, cold weather in California at this time. I decided the single needed a bright and shiny music video to put a smile on peoples faces. In efforts to keep the collaboration vibes going, I reached out to my super talented bodyboarder friends, Joshua Garner and Seabass Perez to see if they'd like to sent over clips of them doing what they do in the ocean. And they both delivered the goods.
Along with Joshua and Seabass comes some legendary Hi8 video footage from the vintage days of bodyboarding here in South Laguna and Newport Beach filmed by my mentor, Scotty Carter. Love the old school Wedge shot of Mike Stewart towards the end of the vid.
This music video also features Chuck Treece and Hayden Hanson shredding on the skateboard along with Austin Keen on skimboard, my wife Lisset and stepson Lucian snowboarding, along with some fun footage of Helena and her homies having fun in San Diego County, and yours truly on the beach singing in front of tourist in Laguna Beach. That was a lot of fun.
Thank you to everyone involved on this project. Much love and respect to the legend, Roy Ayers who wrote this song and inspired me since i was 15.Tribute to Lloyd HemmingsJah Mex2022-02-03 | The one and only Lloyd Hemmimgs, reggae artist from Kingston, Jamaica, has passed.

The vision finally came full circle yesterday (March 1st, 2016). We recorded six songs from the Soul Garden demo and two brand new singles. It's a blessing and an honor to work with them. Although they have been left out of countless history books and documentaries, these three are largely responsible for building the foundation of roots reggae music.
