Buying property in Portugal as a non-resident? The new 7.5% IMT (property transfer tax) rate may not ultimately mean paying more if you are planning to move to Portugal.
In this clip, lawyer Daniel Reis explains the new Portugal IMT rules and the important difference between people who are already Portuguese tax residents, those planning to move within two years, and non-resident buyers who are purchasing as foreign investors.
If you qualify to become a Portuguese tax resident within the required two-year period, you may be able to reclaim the difference between the 7.5% IMT paid upfront and the amount that would have applied under the standard rates.
