Join us for a special conversation with artists Yreina Cervántez and Jessica Sabogal, moderated by curator Staci Steinberger. Cervántez and Sabogal discuss their respective artistic practices as well as their artworks featured in What Would You Say: Activist Graphics from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (lacma.org/art/exhibition/what-would-you-say).
Yreina D. Cervántez was born in 1952 in Garden City, Kansas. She received a BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Cervántez is currently a Professor in the Department of Chicana/o Studies at the California State University, Northridge. She served as the multicultural coordinator at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) between 1990 and 1993, and was also a California Arts Council Artist in Residence at Self Help Graphics & Art. She participated in some of the earliest silkscreen ateliers at Self Help Graphics & Art in the 1980s, curating the 1st MAESTRAS – Women’s Atelier in 1999, and maintains active association with the organization. Cervántez has been featured in numerous landmark exhibitions of Chicano art.
Jessica Sabogal is a cuir Colombian - American muralistx from San Francisco whose large-scale public artworks attempt to document and disrupt. For the past 10 years, Sabogal has consistently reinvented what it means to be a female muralist in a male-dominated medium. Her murals have been commissioned by Facebook, Google, 20th Century Fox, the University of Southern California, the University of California, The University of Arizona, and The University of Utah among many others. In 2016, Sabogal received KQED’s Women to Watch Award and the following year was commissioned by the Amplifier Foundation for the 2017 Women’s March, after which her “Women Are Perfect” campaign gained international acclaim. Sabogal’s work has since been featured in national and international news and media sources including CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, and the New York Times.
