Florence Hodges, 93, of Dothan, Alabama on Johnny Carsons Tonight Show (Sep 27 1989) happyhappyfunball 2017-09-28 | The best thing about Johnny Carson was his never forgetting his roots. He loved having perfectly ordinary middle Americans frequent his Tonight Show, and treated each of them as reverently as his famous celebrity guests. This particular spot from September 27, 1989 featured a quick-witted 93 year old who volunteered 8 hours per day, 7 days per week at a local hospital. (Perhaps one of her 56 mentioned grandchildren and great grandchildren will find this now long-forgotten Tonight Show appearance here on Youtube.)
The Saddest Prevue Guide That Ever Lived happyhappyfunball 2010-08-19 | Another historical look at the infamous Prevue Guide Amiga software most Americans and Canadians saw between 1988 and the mid-1990s (before the "blue grid" version came about). This one shows the software doing what it was infamous for: being rebooted and having its menus called up by cable company technicians. Only, the particular cable system this footage comes from (West Covina, CA) could almost never make their Prevue Guide work. It failed daily, as if it were literally overseen by monkeys. Prevue Guide in West Covina, CA (1991-1992) happyhappyfunball 2010-05-17 | Another historical look at the famous Prevue Guide software seen on most American and Canadian cable systems between 1988 and the mid-1990s (before the "blue grid" version came about). This video includes clips of the software being rebooted and having its local operator maintenance menus called up by someone at the cable company. The clips are from August 22 1991, November 26 1991, and January 15 1992. Also included is also a (very) brief glimpse from October 13 1991 of the EPG Sr. (Prevue Guide's predecessor software) from a neighboring cable system, with its bottom crawl/ticker frozen up. Electronic Program Guide in West Covina, CA on 12/20/89 happyhappyfunball 2010-05-11 | Here is an interesting historical look at the "Senior" (Amiga 2000 version) of the old Electronic Program Guide software which ran on most cable systems throughout America and Canada during the late 1980s and early 1990s. (The EPG Sr. software was later upgraded into Prevue Guide -- the split-screen version seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtvPd9MSCvs -- which also ran on the Amiga 2000.) This particular video demonstrates the EPG Sr. running in maintenance mode as a local cable company employee updated the local scrolling and ticker advertisements it displayed while running normally. At the end of this clip, the cable technician finishes his work and puts the software back into normal listings mode. But apparently while getting up to leave, he bumped the Amiga's keyboard the wrong way and tossed the EPG back into maintenance mode without noticing. And that's how it stayed for the rest of the day. The audio in this clip is another historical item in its own right: Cable Radio Network, which many cable companies used during the 1980s and 1990s as a soundtrack for their assorted computer-generated information channels.
