iviachupichu Weina doesn't disappoint. As usual, this was tuned by manually breaking up notes for pitch bends then running auto pitch. I hardly made adjustments to the tuning this time but I did have to fix a lot of the pronunciation (this is why I dislike doing English songs xD).

Proper use of AI Retakes on Timbre makes a huge difference so I'll have to add that to the end of my tuning process for any non-lazy cover. The last trick here was using Saki's auto pitch and turning HDVM Timbre expressiveness up for the ending to make it sound more ephemeral.

【Stardust/Xingchen】 STARS AND SEA / Huang Xiaoyun 【Synth V Cover】

iviachupichu 2023-10-23 | Finally got around to finishing a cover with Stardust thanks to the new Synth V 1.10.0 update! Huang Xiaoyun has a perfect voice with perfect control so instead of trying to match her and failing horribly, I went for bright and youthful vocals that power through all the parts that were originally delicate. Harmony is Kyomachi Seika because Seika is life.

My workflow has changed a bit with the new version but it's actually more intuitive now. I used a combination of auto pitch from different banks, mostly Feng Yi (verses) and Cong Zheng (chorus) with some Weina and Stardust, combined with AI Retakes and some manual drawing. All notes are set to "Sing" pitch mode at the start. Swap to the voice bank whose auto pitch you want to use, do AI Retakes to taste, set the pitch mode to "Manual" to lock the pitch curves, swap back to the correct voice bank, then make manual adjustments as needed. You can do this on a note-by-note basis and easily go backwards by setting the note back to "Sing" then resetting the pitch (or just undo, usually). The only tricky part is mentally isolating the voice from the pitch when using AI Retakes with a different voice bank. You can technically lock the notes and switch back each time but that would take way too long. I didn't use Timbre Retakes for this cover because I couldn't hear any differences in the beta version I used.

【Hanakuma Chifuyu AI】 Asu e no Tobira / I WiSH 【Synth V Cover】

iviachupichu 2023-03-05 | One of my favorite songs! Chifuyu wasn't my first choice for this song but her voice is cute and I wanted to use her. xD She's no match for Kawashima Ai's angelic voice though...

I think Chifuyu hit her sweet spot on chorus after the bridge around 3:49. I especially like how she sounds there, particularly on "fuite", but she's a bit too soft for my tastes outside of this and the verses.

Synthesizer V Quick Tip - Controlling Note Inflection with Breaths/Silence

Bonus: Placing a "cl" (glottal stop) phoneme very low to the left of your note can produce a vocal fry for some banks like SOLARIA and Weina.

This is a really simple trick that can add lots of personality into your tuning. If you already have breaths between notes then you can jump straight into this. Note that, in many cases, it's easier to use Depth Left/Right instead. I won't generally go out of my way to add a breath/silence for this unless I want a particularly strong (usually upward) inflection.

I only noticed after recording and editing that the audio is panned slightly left, sorry! While transcribing songs, I usually pan my transcription to one side and the original vocals to other so that they're easier to distinguish. Let's just call this a little bonus tip instead of a mistake. xD

This was mainly tuned with Mai's auto pitch, filling in with Weina auto pitch where Mai went too hard (mostly the verse / prechorus). Plenty of manual pitch bends and adjustments as usual, and I also used AI Retakes for Timbre this time. Left the audio unmixed since this was more of a test than anything else.

Most of the tuning was done with the auto pitch method shown in my recent quick tip video. I used Karin's auto pitch as a baseline then replaced parts that needed more power with Mai's auto pitch, adjusting the intensity with Expressiveness and my pitch scaling script. There was still a bit of manual adjustment to refine things, of course.

The other little trick here is using breaths to control the ending inflection of notes. You can also do this via Depth Right or drawing pitch curves but it's much easier to drag a breath (or "sil", silence) note up/down instead. You'll see this used throughout the cover to bend upwards. If the breath leads into another note then I might split it up and drag the second part down to control the start of the next note as well.

Synthesizer V Quick Tip - Auto Pitch with Different Voice Banks

This method is an alternative to Instant Mode. Auto Pitch is tuned differently for each voice bank, so this becomes more flexible the more voice banks you have. You'll need Pro in order to make full use of this, but it'll still work to some degree with Basic + Lite banks.

You'll probably want to keep Pitch Correction unchecked, as this is (non-intuitively) the default behavior.

Auto Pitch Cheat Sheet
Dreamtonics: Mai (powerful/rock), Weina (powerful/soul), Qing Su (melodic w/ a little power), Feng Yi (melodic), Saki (tender/emotional)
TOKYO6: Chifuyu (soft), Rikka (clear), Karin (balanced)

Auto pitch for the voice banks above are all pretty decent but my top picks (as of 1.8b) would be Mai, Weina, Feng Yi, and Rikka. Mai and Weina have a lot of punch but might over-sing. Feng Yi is beautiful for filling in melodic parts, or you can use Rikka for a crisper rendition. Saki produces "fragile"-sounding tuning which is nice for emotional sections. Qing Su is similar to Feng Yi with a bit more power. Karin is similar to Rikka with a bit sharper notes. Chifuyu produces pretty much what you'd expect from a whisper voice.

I haven't really had positive experiences with Stardust/Seika auto pitch yet so I can't say much about those.

Similar to the previous cover, I combined rising Tension and the Power vocal mode to ramp up the vocals through the song. The three choruses actually have identical tuning and the only difference is the voice settings. I stuck close to the original vocals since this is my first time using Qing Su and I'm still getting familiar with her.

【Natsuki Karin AI Lite】Seikan Hikou / Nakajima Megumi (Short Ver.)【Synth V Instant Mode Cover】

This cover uses the new "Instant Mode" added in Synth V 1.6 which applies auto pitch to every note. Auto pitch can get pretty sloppy so this isn't a very precise method, but it can definitely save a lot of time.

(instant mode is equivalent to selecting every note and applying normal auto pitch)

I think Instant Mode is great for getting semi-realistic tuning quickly, especially when paired with bends on the notes themselves. However, it does have a tendency to go full stupid so you'll want to manually fine tune afterwards for more polished results.

Simple guide for realistic pitch tuning in Synthesizer V

Addendum: Certain voice banks like Weina will automatically insert very nice pitch bends with their Auto Pitch, so you may want to try running Auto Pitch before (and after) doing manual bends to see which sounds better.

I like to think of realistic pitch tuning as adding imperfections and personality into your robotic singer. You want to see more ups and downs in your pitch curves, even (especially?) on repeated notes.

1) add breaths! humans breathe. this varies by song, as breaths are edited out in some genres
2) split notes and bend upward into notes + roll into other notes. try to stay in the same key. humans don't hit notes perfectly every time
3) auto pitch (or manually draw pitch curves if you prefer)
4) reset/adjust pitch wherever auto pitch messes up

I suggest playing with all the sliders in the voice settings and getting the voice sounding as nice as possible before doing your pitch tuning. Pitch bends are largely intuition + trial and error. Just keep splitting notes in different places and bend up/down until you like how it sounds.

A fairly reliable workflow for auto pitch is:
auto pitch → auto pitch (customized) on bad notes → reset pitch + adjust pitch properties on bad notes → manually draw pitch curves on bad notes

You'll rarely *need* to draw pitch curves if you're bending notes and fine-tuning your settings beforehand.
