Most countries extol the benefits and virtues of trade globalization. However, recent and escalating geopolitical contention has challenged the assumption that free market capitalism and trade openness are the inevitable "end of history." Instead, an increasingly complex environment has emerged, leading to greater protectionism, supply chain fragmentation, alignment towards political allies, and increased nearshoring. In this evolving landscape, the focus shifts towards fostering sustainable infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and building resilient supply chains. The future of trade globalization will see countries and businesses navigating these complexities with strategic partnerships and innovative solutions to ensure high-quality, resilient infrastructure and economic cooperation.

China’s era of low-value exports to drive double-digit growth is over. Combined with cyclical and systemic challenges throughout China’s domestic economy and the global economy, the years of sustained high growth have passed. But these realities should not encourage investors to write off China. Rather, recent successes in key industries and sectors have shown that frontier opportunities for investments beckon. How are investors rethinking strategies and restructuring their investments in China? In what ways is China still "the next China?"

Full session title: "Legacies of Our Fathers": Endearing Lessons from Mount Everest on Climbing, Culture, and Conservation
2023 marked the 70th anniversary of the first documented ascent of Mount Everest. Since then, Everest has been the pinnacle of extreme mountaineering and captured the imaginations of climbers and enthusiasts from around the world. In the process, it significantly transformed culture and tourism in Nepal and the wider Himalayan region. Today, the boom in extreme outdoor adventuring now poses challenges to the region's natural ecosystems as they try to balance culture, conservation, and livelihoods.
In this session, Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing, sons of the first two men to summit Mount Everest—Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay—talk about the lasting legacies of their fathers over the last 70 years since their first summit: the continuing hunt for extreme outdoor adventure, the impact on communities and livelihoods, and efforts to preserve the environment and cultural heritage in the face of burgeoning tourism, changing seasons, and climate change.

Investing in children is not just an ethical imperative—it's a powerful catalyst for global growth, sustainable development, and breaking the cycle of poverty. Children are experiencing a significant rise in anxiety and depression, increasing rates of obesity and related health problems, exposure to environmental hazards, and educational disparities. They also grapple with social inequality, violence, conflict, and the pressures of social media. Meanwhile, women continue to confront systemic barriers, including limited access to education and employment opportunities, gender-based violence, and social and economic inequality. By continuing to invest in accessible healthcare, quality education, and economic opportunities for children, we can unlock vast potential that benefits economies and societies alike. This exciting panel will explore strategies for targeting investments and philanthropy to address specific challenges faced by children, and how various stakeholders—individuals, philanthropic organizations, and corporations—can effectively collaborate to ensure these efforts reach the most disadvantaged populations and drive sustainable, transformative change.

#Global #miglobalStrengthening Democracy in the 21st Century | Global Conference 2022Milken Institute2024-09-16 | In the last year democracies of the West watched Russia invade Ukraine and the Taliban's forces capture Kabul. As authoritarian regimes attempt to spread and reinstate rule, it brings into question the conditions that have enabled bad actors to exert control. How can democratic nations and alliances push back their influence and set the stage for more stable democracies in the future? While democratic countries focus on spreading their values abroad, they cannot take for granted their citizens' trust in institutions and faith in the democratic process. The spread and accessibility of misinformation has shined a light on the role of media and consumption of information in shaping societal values at home and abroad. This panel will address tensions between democratic and authoritarian values, how global leaders are rethinking alliances, and what it all means for the future of democracy.
