First 13 levels played for fun.
The sequel to one of the finest games ever. Bubble Bobble 2 offers more of the same as part 1 but with improved graphics and level designs. Although I still prefer the original (mostly for the music) this second outing of the game is still well worth playing.
First 12 levels played for fun.
One of the classic retro Taito games on the NES. I have to say that it isn't the best version of the game but it still holds up well. You can use the hardware limitations of too many sprites to slow the game play.
World 1 played for fun. I believe that it may be the fastest run on Youtube, that I have seen at least. Please let me know if it's not as I would like to hold the record.
This is part three of the Bubble Bobble story. Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars.
It's one of those games I played on the Amiga when I was younger but was lucky enough to find a mint boxed NES version a few years ago. It's a simple game of platforms and bad guys but absolutely perfect in all it's conversions. Like it's predecesors, this is one of the must play games of the early 90's.
Introduction and Level 1.
If you like Castlevania clones this is the game for you. Sega's classic for the Master System captures almost all of the same elements. A collection of horror themed levels, different weapons to pick up, the awkward moving up stairs control and of course Dracula. This may not be the most original game but it's certainly one to look out for.
Introduction and the first level of game play.
An interesting stealth horror game. It's very slow to play with a large emphasis on the stealth element. Overall not a bad game though, something a little different from the other survival horror games of the time. The game was later remade (with many changes) for PS3 as Forbidden Siren: Blood Curse.
I may make a walkthrough at some stage if there is interest.
Level 1 played for fun.
One of the best titles on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. A smooth scrolling run and gun shooter that will provide you hours of fun.
Stage 1. Played for fun (badly).
More commonly known as Ninja Gaiden outside of Europe this game is one I remember well from childhood. It's the usual plot of 1 ninja vs 100s of bad guys. The animation and music are quite reasonable, for me the controls let the gameplay down a bit. Sometimes you jump when you are trying to throw etc. The bad guys are also a little repetative after a while, they will beat you down every time if you approach them directly so you have to either weave at them from a diagonal or jump in to them. The game has it's issues and is showing it's age a little, however this one is still enjoyable to revisit.
First 3 levels and bonus stage.
Many hours spent on this game when I was younger. The perfect balance of simple top down racing and competing with friends for the number 1 spot. Perhaps only bettered by it's sequel.
Stage 1, (first mini boss).
Quick note: I'm terrible at this game! Please feel free to remind me in the comments ;-)
A quick playthrough up to the first mini boss. Shadow of the Beast is incredibly difficult for the first time player, if your attacks aren't spot on you will get hit. Whilst the game is difficult you will get much better with practice since the game enemies are always in the same place with the same attack pattern. Through trial and error you should be able to complete one which is very satisfying (the end game screen is not though). The Amiga version has by far the best graphics and sound. Looking forward to seeing if the remake will have the same atmospheric charm and difficulty level.
P.S. I have edited out the disk swap and load screens for viewer sanity.
Level 1 and 2 played for fun.
One of the classics of beat 'em up history. Not too bad on the NES considering the sprite limitations although the game is much easier than other versions.
Complete game, 1 life.
Not a speed run but completed in a respectable time.
Aladdin for the Sega Master System. As it's a short game I thought I would upload the complete game. Non tool assisted (as you can see from the numerous hits). It's one of the hidden gems on the Master System. It's a basic platform game with the occasional chase level thrown in. The game is clearly aimed at children which is probably the reason I can actually complete this one in a single sitting :-) Overall a great game although there's some very cheap shots in level 2 as hidden bats and pots attack you at high speed. The health bar is fairly generous though so you can even take down Jafar simply by slashing away and not really worry about your health meter. Enjoy!
Opening title sequence and first level.
Played just for fun. This games makes it in to my list of favourite games of all time, at the time it looked and felt so different to other games it was the closest to playing a movie. So much care has gone in to the animation and despite the use of any speech (other than simple grunts) it's easy to follow and get involved in this gripping rescue attempt/escape story. The concept is great and the execution is outstanding. Delphine did sucha great job here it was no wonder their next outing "Flashback" became such a hit. The same can't quite be said about the third installment of "Fade to Black", the processing power of polygons hadn't quite got up to standard. However, "Out of this World" is a game that has stood the test of time and i'm still playing this one two decades later.
Stages 1 - 8.
The Great Giana Sisters for the Commodore 64 played just for fun. I actually prefer this game to Mario Bros. (possibly because I played this one first). The game follows the classic platform style gameplay. There's various powerups to collect on the way including a rather nifty bouncing ball that can take out most of the bad guys. Every few levels there is also a mini boss, usually in the form of a spider/scorpion thig and then later on a flying dinosaur creature. There's aslo many level warps and secret areas which all add to the fun of the game. Overall an exellent retro classic.
Stages 1 - 5.
Central Cavern,
The Cold Room,
The Menagerie,
Abandoned Uranium Workings,
Eugene's Lair.
Perhaps the game that defined British 8-bit computing? Manic Miner is simple yet incredibly difficult. The aim is to guide Willy the Miner through the caves collecting the shiny objects on each screen to open the next exit. It's certainly got it's place in history. For a game made in someone back room it's stood the test of time very well.
I'm playing for fun here (no cheats). I can get further in the game on one life, just never when i'm recording :-) I know there's alotof you out there taht can speed through this one using all the shortest routes and timings. Anyway, I hope you enjoy viewing as much as I enjoyed re-living this one.
Level 1 Stages 1-3.
http://www.Insert-Disk.com proudly presents "Q-Bert" (Qbert) for the Commodore 64.
Level 1 Stages 1-3.
Q-Bert for the Commodore 64. A highly addictive version of the classic arcade game. The aim is to turn all the platforms in to a new colour by jumping on them. I find the C64 version a little trickier than most conversions. An excellent game for retro fans.
Stages 1 - 13 (including teleport).
One of my favourite games of all time, Bubble Bobble! Although the C64 version isn't the best, it's still a great game and one of the best for the system. The music is great, the game play is fun and it's one of those games you can still play for hours, decades after it was released. It's one of those retro games that really makes you happy.
Sing along now...
#Dun-dun-dun-du-dun-dun-dun-da-da-da...
Stages 1 - 3.
A particularly bad 16-bit fighting game for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. 12 oversized champions must fight it out to save their world from being destroyed. There are very few moves to perform and the game play seems reasonably slow compared to some of the better 16-bit fighters. I know that this game has lots of fans, I just not sure that I understand why. The characters are highly amusing though :-)
Boston Celtics Vs Cleveland Cavaliers.
A short game from the popular basketball franchise, played for fun. There's certain sports that make great conversions in to video games, this is certainly one of them. I'm not great at playing the game but it's very enjoyable even after all these years.
Orlando Magic Vs LA Lakers.
Orlando Magic Vs LA Lakers played for fun. Power ups and hot spots are on just for a bit of interest. NBA JAM Tournamet Edition is easily the best of the basketball games released on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It's fast paced and endless fun even if you aren't much of a fan of the sport.
Level 1.
R-Type level 1 played for fun. I messed up the boss a bit but just about got away with it. R-Type is one of the great horizontal shooters in gaming history. It has influenced 100's if not 1000's of games in the years that came after it. There's plenty of power-ups, waves of enemies and interesting boss fights. The Sega Master System version really isn't the best but it does a good job of recreating the excitement of the original, especially as the system is only 8-bit. It's frustrating at times in the later levels but once you remember the positioning of the enemy it's not so bad. Give this one a try, happy gaming!
Level 1 - 8.
Super Off-Road for the Sega Master System. A simple yet very enjoyable racing game. Best know for the arcade version but this simple 8-bit version keeps all the fun. A must play for retro gamers.
Stage 1.
The classic story of girl meets boy, girl gets kidnapped, boy gets turned in to an ape. You couldn't make this stuff up. Toki is an absolute plaftorming classic. Interestingly the Arcade, NES, Amiga and Sega verions all have a huge amount of variants from each other (the arcade version is by far the best). I used to play this one in the arcade each weekend with my friend, later on in life I added the original PCB to my JAMMA collection. The game is a simple platformer. There's all the usual shot power-ups, tricky jumps and boss fights. I highly recommend picking up this one. It's reasonably easy to complete which make this an ideal game for those getting in to retro gaming.

Stages 1 and 2.
King of the Monsters is about as Japanese a fighting game could be. Select from one of four oversized characters and fight it out against the rest. This is basically Godzilla the game without the trademark characters. The idea is simply to defeat your opponent by pinning them wrestling style to claim victory. It's a great little game and a nice alternative to the Street Fighter style fighters. There's a nice combat system enabling you to collect power-ups if you pull off a throwing move, collect therese power ups and strengthen your character.
Level 1.
The Master System version of the classic Sega arcade hit. I have to say that this 8-bit version isn't anywhere near the standard of the 16-bit versions. However, it's still reasonably fun to play all these years later. Simply destroy the oncoming aliens that are invading. In it's defence this version did try to recreate all of the varied level designs of the original with far less power. Worth a 5 minute go if you have some spare time, try out the Mega Drive/Genesis version though for a much better home conversion.
First levels played for fun.
Fast Food! is one of the spin-off games from the Dizzy Egg series. The game is maze based similar to Pac-Man or Hungry Horace. The aim is to collect the food items (and any power-ups) whilst avoiding the ghost like monsters. The first few levels are reasonably easy as most of the food moves in a predictable way, only the chickens move at the same speed as you meaning that you will have to cut them off to collect them. There's also that age old issue that you can be trapped by two monsters and there's little that you can do about it. For a small spin-off game the quality is surprisingly good. Dizzy looks good, the graphics are appropriate and the in game tunes are vintage Code Masters.Overall I would suggest re-visiting this one if you were a Dizzy fan back in the late 80's/90's. I'm not great at this type of game so please excuse the erratic paths I use to collect the food :-)
First level played for fun.
I'm terrible at playing this one but thought i'd give the first level a try for the nostalgia value. It's not a bad game at all. The only issue seems to be the swarms of robots that you are outnumbered by, they don't really give you much of a chance if you run out of laser power and it's all to easy to get trapped. Overall though i'm still a fan of this one. There's great styling and good energy to the game.
Stages 1, 2 and a bonus round.
A retro classic if ever there was one. Use Flicky to collect the escaped chicks and return them to the exit. Watch out for those cats though! This is one of Sega's older games on the Mega Drive but just as playable today. It's one of those games that looks simple but by round 6 the game gets quite challenging.
Arcade level 1.
Stage 1 of King of Fighters XIII for the Xbox 360. Only picked this one up yesterday but really enjoying it already. It seems to be more of a return to the height of the series, it plays very similar to the 2000 edition. Of course the animation has been reworked and the backgrounds are fantastic. A great improvement over the slightly pixel-ridden XII edition. I highly recommend if you are looking for an alternative series to the endless Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat releases that seem to be swallowing up the current generation of home consoles.
Opening title Sequence.
Levels 1-7 played for fun.
Q*Bert is a 1982 classic arcade game. Simply stand on the cubes to change their colour to complete a matching set. Watch out for those snakes and balls though.
I have to say that i'm a fairly poor Q*Bert player but I still enjoy playing it all these years later :-)
Levels 1-3 played for fun.
Classic retro action in "Yar's Revenge". It's a simple case of destroying the enemies shield whilst avoiding the slow travelling bullet and the occasional hurricane. Once enough of the shield is destroyed you attempt to destroy the enemy by using a missile. This missile is prepared by either eating a piece of shield or touching the enemy. It's then just a case of timing the shot. As you can see i'm no expert :-) It's a really addictive game considering its age. I wasn't impressed on my first play but this one grew on me very quickly.
Levels 1-3 played for fun. Arcade mode.
Classic dungeon crawling hack 'n slash adventure in Gauntlet 4. Fight your way through dungeon after dungeon packed with wave after wave of enemies. Along the way collect keys and potions to aid you in your quest.
Opening title Sequence and first 3 fights.
A quick look at Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360. The first of the series to get true HD graphics. Overall the Virtua Fighter series holds up very well as a fighting experience. Plenty of combos, secial moves and counter attacks. The players are also customisable with unlockable game content.
Opening title Sequence.
Opening title sequence from Dynasty warriors 7 for the Xbox 360. Great game full of huge battles and high kill counts.
Opening title Sequence and Chapter 1 Verse 1. Mega Black Label 1.1. Difficulty Level 3.
A quick play of stage 1 "Halloweentown Aflame". I'm a big fan of the Japanese frantic shooters. This was all going so well until the Wandering Reaper boss :-) Caught in the wrong place at the wrong tme at the end there. Deathsmiles is fast and furious, I can just about play leve3 3 difficulty but there is also a Level 999 difficulty which is just crazy!
I'm playing the Mega Black Label 1.1 version here, there's a few changes here including a new button arrangement, the ability to play as Sakura, an additional Crystal Shrine stage and the ability to control your familiar with the second analogue stick. I can definitely recommend this game for fans of Cave's other releases although it may have limited appeal for those that prefer slower paced shooters.
Opening title Sequence and stage 1 played for fun.
Just thought I'd post some short gameplay from "Dodonpachi Ressurection" for the Xbox 360. I'ma big fan of the crazy Japanese shooters. The title translates loosly to Angry Boss Bees. Battle wave after wave of enemies in bullet hell or 弾幕 (danmaku) as the Japanse say. I'm not great at this game by any means but it is lots of fun at a reasonable price. It's certainly a challenge and possibly a game that's a little different from your averace vertical shooter. Enjoy!
Opening title sequence and a complete stage 1.
A great vertical shooter. This one can get quite tricky and is very unforgiving should you find yourself moving towards the top of the screen. Nice powerups and great level design. If you like this one I would strongly reccomend Truxton which is essentially the same game with revised space themes sprites and levels.
Level 1 played for fun.
Great retro title on the NES. Lots of enemies and basic power ups. The game is a little easy by todays standards but still a classic. There were multiple releases in this series including several editions of 1944.
Opening title sequence and a complete stage 1.
A very classy classic vertical shooter. Fight against the empire at incredible odds. Great graphics and a long lasting challenge. I tend to prefer the Commodore Amiga version because of the superior audio but the Sega version manages to retain the great gameplay from the original. I tend to find this game quite difficult after the first level. Since most enemies will take more than one hit this is certainly a game that is unforgiving on your trigger fingers.
First level played for fun.
One of the all time great shooters. Simple graphics and simple gameplay but this game has stood the test of time as a hugely playable game on multiple formats. I liked this one so much I bought an original board for my arcade machine, hours of fun!
First 7 levels played for fun.
Clown-O-Mania is one of those games I played at a young age and have always thought well of. The aim is to collect every gem/ball (what ever they are) on the level. There are various bad guys running around as well as razor blades to pick up and use as weapons. The game is simple and fun with catchy music. Having not played this for about 20 years it came back to me quite quickly. If I have a criticism of the game it would be the controls. Since it is an isometric grid I get easily confused about which button to press, I have exactly the same issue with Q*Bert though :-) It's more use error than bad game design. On level 5 the map turns upside-down, now this really hurts my brain as to how to control the clowns direction.
Still, this is a fantastic gem of a retro game and well worth 10 minutes of your time to investigate.
Opening title sequence and a complete stages 1, 2 and 3.
One of the more memorable Sega classics from the early 90's. The game setup is that you are Kid Chameleon, the coolest kid around. You must play a new "real" video game down at the arcade and defeat the evil boss. Throughout the game you will pick up different masks to transform in to a Kid Chameleon with different skills (sort of a Majora's Mask situation going on in a video game arcade). The game looks reasonably dated now but the actual game play is still rather enjoyable. The special mask skills are varied and each are needed to complete the level in which they are found. I particularly like the Jason style hockey mask from Friday 13th, it must be a copyright infringement but it briefly turns the game in to a U Rated Splatterhouse. If I have one criticism of the game it would be that on occasions you have to take leaps of blind faith froma platform only to find yourself in a lava flow or impaled on spikes (this seems to be a common issue with older platform games). Overall though this game is well worth a re-visit if you played this one back in the '90s. If you've have never played it then it may be worth a look out of interest, it certainly has a variety of levels and the skill sets add constant game play change.
Fight 1 played for fun.
Nintendos classic boxing game with plenty of knock outs. The controls are fairly limited to simple dodging and punching. Most of the game play involves learning the pattern of your opponent. For the time I can imagine that this game was quite a good option for all age groups. I like it but Super Punch out! clearly adds a lot more in terms of graphics and game play.
Opening title sequence and a complete stages 1 and 2.
After being reminded by fellow game http://www.youtube.com/user/darrenwalshsock?feature=g-u this afternoon I thought i'd give this one a quick try. Please excuse the poor playing on stage one where I manage to nitro in to other cars :-) Not a bad game at all although i'd like more time to try out the later levels. The idea of the game is that you are a special agent with the chase department. Rather than just arresting suspects you have to chase them and smash their cars up first. Would be much easier just to catch them when they re-fuel (but that possibly wouldn't make the game that exciting). Anyway, enjoy and don't try this sort of driving at home (or on a road).
Opening title sequence and a complete stage 1.
Classic Sega racing today. Turbo Outrun is a game that I remember very well from my childhood. Adapted from the arcade version you must race your way across the USA reaching check points at various key cities. This time though you have the added challenge of police to avoid and also a Turbo button that you can utilise. The game starts off fairly easy but gets very tricky. There's lots of blind hills and tight corners, so using the Turbo is both simultaneously useful and dangerous. Between legs of the race you have the option of upgrading your car, I find that I need the high performance tyres before anything else otherwise i'm off the road in seconds with the powerful engine upgrade. This is a classic game and still plays well even today. Well done Sega, this is a graet retro game and it's no wonder it is a yard stick for the driving genre.
Opening introduction sequence.
As an addition to the normal Nights game Sega released a Christmas Special Edition. This one is from my personal collection and I really enjoy the game concept. Nights was also one of the first games credited with using analogue controls and was even supplied with its own pad. Merry Christmas everyone!
