Can a Subscription Box be Sustainable? thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich 2024-05-20 | A company reached out to me and offered to send me a product. This happens a lot and I often say "no" unless it is something viewers have requested or I think it is something new and innovative or a good alternative to what is on the market. This box was sent to me for free to check out.You can read about their sustainable mission here: the-hobby-hop.subbly.me/articles/in-the-box/crafting-and-consumer-waste-reversing-the-impact-1I looked over their website and from what I can see from past kits this is more for the craft curious or beginner crafter or someone who wants to do crafts with their kids, pre-teens especially. (*Please note: The designers of the box have said they designed this for busy mommas who are short on time and want to grab a box and go craft and it may contain sewing needles and other products not designed for children.) I think many people would enjoy the projects but advanced crafters probably wouldn't be challenged enough by the contents and probably have the supplies they are featuring already. I think this is perfect for casual hobbists who want everything they need for a project all in one spot so they can sit down and make something. Reviewers said they had enough supplies to make 4-7 projects which brings down the cost per use of the box to an affordable per-project price. Cost: The boxes cost between $40 and $49 depending on how much you pay upfront. Shipping was about $7.50 when I typed in my info on the order form and it seems to be shipped USPS flat rate so you will need to add that to the box price to determine if it is worth it.Bottom line: I like the idea of making project kits from supplies that might otherwise go to waste and the fact two women can make that into a business. It allows them to put more value in the box I think. Lets Clean my Teaching Palettes & Restore Brushes! (yes, this is as dull as it sounds.) thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich 2024-05-03 | Well, you asked for it, a palette clean-up video where I dispense bits of advice on teaching, setting up a travel art studio, making the most of your art supply budget, and restoring brushes that have seen better days. Let's hang out and have a relaxing cleaning sesh. I wish I took before picks of the brushes and palettes, I always forget to do that! Winsor & Newton Mixing Set of 6 Designer Gouache Review thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich 2024-04-29 | I bought this 6-tube mixing set of Winsor & Newton Designer Gouache a few months ago because I was curious about the brand and I wanted to review the smaller mixing sets offered by various companies to see what's the most useful set. You can find this set on Amazon: amzn.to/3xxlLRp and Blick: http://shrsl.com/4hlzv *blick has open stock tubes as well and often the prices on sets are the same or cheaper than Amazon.The colors in the set are Zinc White, Ivory Black, Primary Red, Primary Blue, Primary Yellow and Permanent green middle. the tubes are 14ml and a simple mixing brochure with info on the colors in the range is included.Pros:PriceColors mix wellPigment and lightfastness info is providedEasy to work withRewets fine so the dry paint on your palette can be reusedCons:The colors are fairly transparent for a gouacheThe red is not lightfastThere was some binder separation on a few of the colorsIn my opinion, the green is a waste in this set, and a brown would have been much more useful.Bottom line:I think these paints are nice and well-priced. The opacity was good enough that I did not struggle to layer colors or paint on toned paper. I enjoyed the color selection (except the green) and liked the zinc white for mixing. Another Way to Seal Your Watercolors! I did not like using it on furniture because you periodically needed to reapply it, hence why I have this leftover. I wondered if there was an artsy use for this stuff and after some experimenting I found one. Another Paul Rubens Watercolor Set? This was sent to me for free to review. The palette is packaged in a screen-printed black and gold (or pink and gold)tin wrapped in a black cloth in a giftable sturdy box. I really enjoy the Paul Rubens watercolors, as I have mentioned in previous reviews I have been sent some from the brand to review but I have also purchased some with my own money because I think they are one of the best values going in watercolor. I think this set and the 4th generation tube sets are the sheerest offering of the Paul Rubens Pro range but in terms of quality they are all excellent and I recommend choosing the set with the colors you prefer the most. Make Your Scoring Tool Last Longer! thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich 2024-03-22 | In this video, I will show you how to make crisper folds in your cardstock and keep your scoring tool in better working order. I love my Scor-Pal scoring board, the owner of the company is wonderful and I highly recommend their products.
