It always seems like an easy question

Well it’s a simple one, but definitely not easy

Pro athletes have a very short plane career that we know, most don’t even last a few years

They know they have to be at 110 MPH 🚘

And if the coach or coaches, think they’re not doing this

Then they become a distant memory ☁️

They are drafted (or hired) for the results they will deliver

NOW NOT YESTERDAY 🙌

Running your service business should be nothing different

As my colleague Chris Hanna says, you should be “All In”

These players that we will see today on the Super Bowl for 2023 will define what it is to be the two best in the NFL 🏈

However, even if you aren’t a pro athlete (you are a professional)

Learn from the grit, determination, and hard work of these warriors on the field

But the truth is, most to not

Even being efficient with your time without planning it out, will eventually turn to fatigue and burnout 🔥

I can relate 🫲

I’ve Been There 🫲

So what’s the secret? And is there one?

The truth is, yes, you have to think like time is not an option or at least extra time

I spent 25+ years in the disaster restoration industry which of you don’t know is a 24/7/365 business

We didn’t know what’s gonna happen five minutes from right now let alone five days

Because I, and then he like me worked in this crazy industry realized we had to be super focused on what we were trying to accomplish

We didn’t have the luxury of schedule meetings that most likely would get rescheduled, or typically canceled 😠

It’s definitely a good idea to narrow down your tasks and goals

Keep everything very focused on the priorities more of the needs than the wants!!

Focus, Focus, Focus 🧘‍♂️ 🧘

It’s one of the most powerful tools 🧰 most millionaires and many billionaires use every day to get shit done NOW!

Help, My fence Has Fallen Down

Rob M Lyon 2023-02-09 | One of my clients emailed 📧 me in a bit of a panic

She said, and I quote ”Help, my fence is falling down 👇

After a second or two, I was able to put what she was asking together

Her rate of attrition was very high, and she was losing customers and clients faster and faster

My first question was, what are you doing to keep them?

I often refer to clients with this, Where is your fence lying at??

If it’s half way down, that’s one thing but if it’s on the floor something has to be done quick 🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♂️

In the podcast recording I did today, I took a small clip just dealing with DM or direct mail

You never want to wait till you have a problem to handle the problem, being proactive, is literally a sure fire way of success

Personally, I have met several over the years and some, in fact were actual multimillionaires

I was just speaking with a new client yesterday, and as we were going through some questions, they explained to me that they went to hire a famous online influencer

But had ultimately decided not to go through with it

So, I was a little curious, and I asked why they came to that determination

She laughed, and said because he had bragged to her that he was a millionaire many times over!!

And she thought great, but what does that have to do with me?

I didn’t go on to tell her that I know several multimillionaires, and have been worth that myself in the past

But, a Lion 🦁 does not need to tell the other animals in the jungle that they are a LION

And neither does a millionaire 💵

Last time I checked, Bill Belichick arguably one of the most successful coaches in history never really played the game

That being said, he’s still an expert at coaching!!

No Doubt 🤷‍♂️ about it!!

Does someone achieving financial success become a good indicator that they have great experience and can help you?

YES

But in the same breath, there is no need for someone to be arrogant enough to make such a claim!!

Successful people are no different things like (I’m Successful) never actually leave their mouth because they don’t need to say anything (at all)

They let the results speak for themselves!! ✔️

What Is Brand Positioning

What if the answer is actually BOTH

Positioning and branding are two entirely different things although they can work together, they are not the same

An easy example of a brand is the NFL and the Kansas City 🌆 Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles 🦅

All of these above have shown to be a strong brandable asset!! Worth Billions 💵 💵 💵

However, all the players on the field can’t be quarterbacks

If that were the case, it would be a short game

A very short one********

However each player takes over a certain position such as a quarterback, kicker, running back ect.

Without all of these superstars playing each position like a true master on the field, there would be no NFL or pro-Sports for that matter!!

Your business is no different, there is a position for every part of your business that need to run at 💯 %

Without that, your team Business/Brand) won’t grow let alone survive in the future!!

If you were missing a player on the field, it would hurt badly

And in the end you will be outdone by other teams (competitors) that are investing in theirs!!

I’ve been asked, aren’t they the same thing?

And the answer, without a doubt is NO!

When a person leaves a job, maybe as a technician or office staff they have learned certain skills

Although these skills are extremely important at the doing at the job like the great (Michael Gerber - EMyth Fame) says

They have absolutely nothing to do with running a service company for that matter any company

I am also not saying you can’t learn it, I’m a result of proper training early on coming from the ground up

But even with all that, I had no idea how to start a business just to run one

Still Important ( And I am glad I did)

Learning the managerial skills and understanding how to follow, certain metrics made a world of difference to my success

I could totally understand when somebody is frustrated because they don’t know how to even read simple financial documents like a P&L or a Balance Sheet (yes they are important)

But

Learning how to plan from planning how to Learn early on was crucial to my personal success, and to those of many others

Master your running, scaling, and visioning of your enterprise and you will never look back!!

It is truly did the end of an era, the rumors are true, and Tom Brady has officially retired from being the greatest of all time

My wife is a massive fan all the way back to his Michigan days, even our 🐕 dog is named Brady 😂 (Love That Dude)

Whether you like him or not, he is without a doubt a legend!!

You don’t even need to be a football fan to understand the impact he had, and how well he is known

The things I always respected about Tom was incredible work ethic and demanding more out of himself than anyone else

That being said, when you played with him, you knew your (A) game was barely enough!

But he never asked from others anymore, then he would demand out of what he was possible of performing on the field!

He was the true epitome of a leader wherever he went, think about the fact that on your one from leaving the comfort of the New England Patriots to head south, and bring in a Super Bowl in Tampa (while playing at the home 🏠 stadium 🏟️

Just WOW!!

He inspired a generation of incredible talent like Patrick Mahomes and others to be the very best of their game!

My reason for writing this, and my only reason is that you will go your entire life, working your ass off only to find out it’s gone in a flash!⚡️

I can even remember a point we’re didn’t matter if I lived or died!!!!

That’s no way to be on this earth 🌏 because honestly no one changes until they are ready to or force to!!

Remember, the reason you’re doing this is for your loved ones! 👦 👧

Rob M Lyon 2023-01-23 | This Weeks Q&A for January 23, 2023. We talked to three different people about three different issues affecting their business. Question number one comes in from Jim about how often should I market my service business, question number two comes from Bobby and he asked about a maintenance schedule and how often she regular maintenance be done on your service trucks question number three came from Alan we talked about a top level employee that has some issues and has had three right ups in the past. Her question is how long should I put up with this or when should I cut the cord.

I guess it happens to everyone, but this time really sent me back, I’ve seen some pretty crazy things that have happened to me in the past or companies or Bran even my client companies but this one really shocked me. It actually seemed almost blatant that we were blamed for doing something just about statistically impossible. We were blamed for not just ruining one door, but SIX

I was personally shocked and horrified that somebody would be so blatant to blame us for something that literally could not have happened and hasn’t happened to anyone else that I know of, after nearly 30 years in the service industry, I have never seen something so obvious, but now we’ve entered a new era of prequalification. We have check lists And systems in place to cover us from the standpoint of cleaning, including pictures of the areas, but not of all the defects that were there prior to our arrival. We cleaned some tile and grout in stone and a clients house that we felt a little edgy about but still did it anyway only to have them not blame us for the cleaning job but we must’ve sucked their doors that were easily an inch or more off the floor.

Am I being Catfished?? Why are they doing this??

Rob M Lyon 2023-01-11 | We recently had someone messages saying that they felt their business was being quote unquote “Catfished”, no I was definitely familiar with the term specially since there was a reality TV show out with a similar name. It was more about the pretense of people falsely claiming they were someone they were not on dating apps. But I did get me thinking, have I actually been catfish as well in the past and the truth is yes!!

Cat fishing is nothing more than someone trying to prank your business and your reputation by writing bad things about you. We’ve all been there whether it’s been that restaurant on yelp or a bad review on Google, we’ve all had to deal with people that have said less flattering things about us and if you haven’t, give it time.

I know it’s hard to believe but there are some extremely envious people out there that can’t get past someone else succeeding even letting it consume them seeing them as the ultimate competition and that they are out to put someone out of business. It’s an extremely unfair way, and almost all cases can result in a civil litigation and even in some areas a criminal issue.

Writing something about another person that is known to be faults for your own benefit is its own version of committing fraud, and even though like I said above most likely you can’t be prosecuted for it, you can’t be responsible in court in a civil manor. In this podcast they discuss ways to not only fish that person out, but to try and resolve it peacefully without it leading to further damage.

But the end of the day that only goes so far if you are a jerk to them or unprofessional. I am currently in Chandler Arizona visiting relatives and I noticed while traveling around the many service companies had their vehicles clearly marked and appeared to be extremely professional. Now I don’t really know these people but yes I did look up the reviews and they seem very legit, but if people don’t like you they won’t buy from you.

One of the service companies was a high-end HVAC service claiming that they do very strange and background checks on their employees and that was the main reason to charge higher prices because they were getting experienced and safe technicians. Your customers and clients already expect that the staff members they are gonna deal with in their homes or businesses are not three time felons or anything of the sort. They obviously expect you to send people that are competent enough to do the job, so these are never reasons customers and clients would choose you. What The F*** Is Positioning?? Do I Really Need to Know It??

Rob M Lyon 2022-12-26 | I was recently asked by one of my mentors (a pretty famous one ironically) why the F*** I stopped doing the podcast Service Without Excuses. I explained him everything from time and having to refocus my other business interest, to I needed more family life, to excuse after excuse after excuse. It’s something I preach against every single day when I talked to entrepreneurs, work with them, or teach them. He asked me the same Y, time after time and said to me something that actually changed my entire thinking if not my world. He said you preach about no excuses but yet that’s all I seem to hear out of you. Tough words from somebody that is approximately 10 years younger than you and has a fraction of what you believe is experience.

After drowning in my own pathetic pity, I decided that he was absolutely right because he was. My mission in this world has to become a resource and help those around me not to have to learn the hard lessons that I did from being pigheaded and frankly moronic. Now I’m not into self deprivation lol, but when it’s deserved it’s deserved and I needed to hear this.

Going fast forward I decided on today’s podcast of the brand new show of the Service Without Excuses podcast episode number 102 to discuss what I believe is the thing I’ve been able to help others the most with positioning. Positioning is in just about everything you do in a business let alone your life, this person asked me do I really need it don’t I just need to be the best marketer of my service. What is Service Business Diversification??

Rob M Lyon 2022-12-16 | After the resent events with companies like FTX diversifying is more important than ever. Obviously, that’s a completely different subject altogether than running an honest, ethical service business, but I think you get the point. You never want to be over diversified because you cannot be good at everything for the most part. I’ve seen rare examples were companies start with one type of offering or service only to go to 10 and $35 million a year to boot.

Think about the services you can offer when diversifying your business, we found a person with ours that there was a need for more hard surface cleaning of outside items like pavers and concrete. In your Your service business how much is Commercial or Industrial, and How much is Residential?

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-29 | We’re working on a commercial location today at a school and I had a little bit of time waiting for things to dry. It got me thinking this is a commercial job and I know in our business about 15% approximately is commercial and as far as industrial they all lumped into the same area. Being our residential services are approximately 85% and even though I’d like to have a little higher commercial number percentage, I prefer to have more of the residential market for us. We predominantly work in two counties here in New Jersey with a population over 1.2 million which give us a big base to work with without having to travel very far. We could certainly work more commercial if we are willing to go farther outside of our service area, but when we did the numbers unless it was a larger size job it wasn’t worth us to go outside of it unless it’s one county over in any direction.

Being we are in a populated area we have distinct advantage of that, however if you’re in a rule area like my friend Scott Smith (congrats on your newborn baby my friend) most likely he has to travel a little bit further out although he’s designed an incredible business in a very small area by reputation primarily.

What Do you do when you get to a job and you can’t complete it so no fault of your own or customers?

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-27 | It’s definitely true but life happens, in today’s video blog I talk about just that. When a customer calls to book a job and isn’t there on arrival with no advance notice they are charged an assessment fee for us to return, because of a reputation people do pay it and sometimes they don’t but that is completely preventable as long as they let us know. In this case today we went to a garden complex in point pleasant New Jersey made famous by Jersey Mike’s subs which you can get anywhere in United States and beyond.

We arrive there to find out the water has been turned off to the entire complex to change out a water main and the water is unavailable . Now in our profession you definitely need water and we only carry approximately 40 gallons on the truck definitely not enough to do a tile & grout cleaning. We tried to come up with different options and while we were there we noticed we could not hook up to water even if it was turned on because the sinks don’t allow aerators to be used, no outside water source, and the washer and dryer. So even if the water was turned on it would’ve been most difficult to complete.

What do you do in the situation is when it’s no fault of your own or your customers , we have no hassle policy in fact she has pre-paid for this job already and we will be there tomorrow afternoon later in the day before her new renters come in. Sometimes you have to go out of the way to make your customers and clients happy and we will do just that. My question is how do you handle things that are unforeseen and your company such as this? Everybody’s company is different and we all have different trades, but what would you do in the situation?

Do I always need a CSR, I am having a very difficult time finding the right people!!

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-26 | Well it’s true I definitely think to this day talking person to person for the most part is the most successful way to sell a job. Depending on tonality and the personality of the CSR answering the phone the customer on the other side can feel that magnetism and if they’re in a good mood or not. The likelihood of you closing a job by talking to them is very high when speaking with them, however I have a good friend that runs a company called www.fittlebug.com that has become very successful for us. I met Steve at a industry trade show a few years ago and after an hour long discussion with him he truly had me rethinking my policies of having an in person CSR answer questions and book jobs for us solely.

He asked me a very simple question, how often do you buy products and services online in particular he used amazon.com as a primary reason for saying so. What do you do to recharge your batteries?

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-25 | Well it’s true when it comes to batteries you could just buy a new pair and continue to do the same over and over again every time you need them, but if it comes to you you’re not replaceable you are but one person. In this case you need to have a very good set of rechargeable batteries but you’re not a robot lol yet some of us think we are. What do you do to recharge your batteries, we can get stuck in the daily grind in the trenches going through the same motions over and over without thinking we need to recharge our own batteries. I was fortunate up to spend a week in Aruba and I could tell you it was extremely relaxing, fun, but most importantly recharging. When a person tells me they haven’t been on vacation in 10 years I almost break for them, think about a piece of machinery they’re using that’s been used 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year without a break. This is how people blow and become an inefficient about them and everybody else around them. Think what little things you could do today that’ll help you recharge your batteries, a trip to a Caribbean island might not be in the cards right now but you need to take time to recharge yourself!!

Are you managing your customers expectations? Are they looking for a diamond you cant produce??

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-15 | I’ve heard this more than once that we’ve had problems with the outcome of the jobs we do in a customer size. They are expecting one thing but we were only able to deliver X, yes some companies estimating program or selling program is showing up/given price/leaving and this is no way to do that. I found the customers and clients like and respect and should expect that you are the professional I can lay out the outcome that you can deliver. While it’s true we can only do the best we can that is something you should forward to those purchasing your services. Managing proper expectations can and will be a true game changer for you going forward, as I said in the title are your customers and clients expecting you to deliver the diamond but you can only deliver the coal? This is so important and if you’re looking at a job ahead of time that should be your project manager/sales person‘s job and if it’s the crew going out it is their responsibility to lay forth the expectations and the realistic outcome to the job. Promise less and overdeliver!

Are You Prepared When things hit the Fan??

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-13 | Are you prepared when things change, do you have a Plan B when things hit the fan???

If you’re anything like me you’re a proactive entrepreneur that plans not just the little things like scheduling but maintenance, inventory, strategy etc. there’s no doubt you’ll get much further ahead by being this way. Unfortunately things do happen in this world through no fault of ours or even our clients and customers, And how you adapted those things and change on a dime can be a valuable business lesson that will stay with you through the rest of your career. Learning how to shift with something I learned quickly in a disaster restoration Field, we never knew five minutes from now versus five hours from now what was gonna happen. Emergencies came in no matter what was going on and sometimes the compounding effect of that could take a toll between your staff and your ability to handle everything timely and efficiently. Working in that business for the better half of 25 years taught me that planning the best you can is a great thing, but Murphy’s Law is in full effect I can change like that.

In this quick video I recorded today for the service without excuses Facebook community we talk about two examples one where landscape company had dropped over 15 tons of rock on the driveway we were about to clean, they had the landscaping crew coming out today to distribute the rock but it was also the day she was having it cleaned. Obviously this was not in the cards as just from the movement back-and-forth with transporting The rock alone made it impossible, we made a decision to have the crew come back and go through all of the equipment on the trailer doing some maintenance on the machines as well as checking all the tools to make sure everything is fully functional and ready for tomorrow when we will return.

A second job we ran into they were doing construction outside and were unable to get to the house in order to clean slate floors, you know the saying when it rains it pours and today was one of those days and thankfully were able to send a crew to other jobs and actually move a job from a different day and two today, that job as well has been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon. How do you handle the situation and how your staff in particular your management handles these things defined your business and how you will grow stronger and smarter by doing so. Are your CSR‘s offering additional services to your clients?

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-08 | The other day we talked about the tech aspect of mentioning additional services while we’re in the home or business, but it got me thinking that would be much easier short and long-term to have the CSR‘s in your office or office staff mentioning this to your customers and clients upon your initial contact why did that be I phone call, , An email, even a direct message through Facebook or other apps which you could integrate other things such as pre-recorded messages while they’re on hold, or when it’s through email or direct messaging you could send them a menu style option showing all of the offerings you have at the time. What this does is cut down on the amount of times you’ll need to scramble when the tech side is adding services on if the CSR‘s do it in advance you can plan your day much better. Make sure you doing things in combination with one another to make it most efficient and systematic, therefore when you train someone new it becomes much easier as it’s part of the culture. Do you Have a specific time when you arrive at your customers and clients home?

Rob M Lyon 2022-07-01 | You’re Customers and clients time is Extremely valuable, in a fast paced world that we live in not wasting someone’s time is huge. When I first moved to New York City in 2013 it was widely acceptable to be there late and if you told somebody you’ll be there by nine usually there between 1030 and 11. Personally I took issue with this as I try to be ahead of time and subscribe to the old saying if you’re on time you’re late. One of the best ways to impress. Your customers and clients is to have that clear line of communication and respect for their time and yours, do you have a specific window of time that you tell your customers and clients are going to arrive at? It really blows but damn my mind. When companies try to tell me I’ll be there between 8 to 12 or 12 to 4 like you I have a very busy life as does my family and I believed to have somebody there to sit around for four hours is completely Irresponsible and disrespectful. Think about your arrival times and how important it is to your customers and clients and it goes without saying customers are typically a one time transaction until you turn them into clients which are the people that refer you and use you over and over. Narrow your timeframe down to one hour, you do not have to be exact saying it’s 1 PM but give them a little bit of a tight window. And let them know you’ll arrive between that time frame. How often do you keep in touch with your clients?

Rob M Lyon 2022-06-29 | If you ask different service business owners, you’ll find that it becomes a varied mix when it comes to their marketing. I once heard that marketing is not an event, but a process and I could not agree more, the question becomes when it is enough as well as when is it become too much and as Dan Kennedy has said in one of the greatest marketing systems of all time magneticmarketing.com you go from a welcome guest to the annoying pest. While we’re on it I highly recommend any of his no BS books. The information you find from him it’s just as valuable today as it was decades ago with many relevant factors in the online community. There should always be systems in place for how you contact them with offers you put out as well as the frequency of when they see these. My question to many of you is how often do you stay in touch with your customers during any given period, for example over period of year do you do it monthly, quarterly, yearly, or even earlier than any of those. Staying in touch with your customers and clients builds invisible fence around them and allows position and brand loyalty to you first and foremost but the question is when it is the right time to reach out to them. I have a contractor I’m working with right now that feels touching base with them on a monthly segment it’s just way too often and will be seen as pushy even turning some of them away. My thought has been depending on the message, if it’s an outright sales pitch he is 100% correct, but if it’s just there to keep in touch with them with valuable resources of information that’s a completely different message. Let me know what your thoughts are as everybody’s business is a bit different, but in the service industry it seems to be relatively consistent where your market and Message should match as in the immortal words again of Mr. Dan Kennedy!!
